4 door to 2 door conversion

I'm posting this in the lounge as it's a Dodge Coronet being converted. Seems like an awful lot of work.

Lots of hours went into that conversion for sure.....and the 4 door seats and interior still need to be replaced.

Wouldn't it have been easier and cheaper to find a 2 door shell to start with?

I would have been happy to have the 4 door as it was, more unique.

I agree. There still has to be some surviving 2 door Coronets cheap in the southern US.

I agree, you have to buy 2 cars, plus spend all that time and money to do the conversion, etc.  Not an 'easy' one either, ilke the '62-'65 Mopars, or '55-'57 Chevys.

Plus, it's a waste of a nice clean 4-door, which I too would have been happy to have as is.

I'd have better things to do with my time and a car budget.

Although the motives are questionable, there is no denying the talent. Some guys have it in spades.

Maybe he just did it to show it could be done?

That was probably the reason, but it's not the first time it's been done.

Here's a thread of one (Belvedere 4-door to Road Runner) on Moparts that started in 2015, but the reason was that he started with 2 cars that were not so great and he didn't want to sink a bunch of time and money into a 4-door.

https://board.moparts.org/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php/topics/1832092/69-belvedere-4-door-to-2-door-conversion.html

The Coronet 4-door in this thread looked too nice to cut up, but that's just my opinion because in most circles 4-doors are considered pretty much worthless.

Presumably it's a sedan ("post") body?  A much easier conversion, as everything is common between 2 and 4 door sedans, except the doors, quarter panels, B-pillar, and interior parts.  '62-'65 Mopar B-bodies have the same situation, which is part of the reason you see a lot more 'Max Wedge' appearing hot rods out there these days (IMHO).

'68-'70 Mopar B-bodies share much less commonality, as evidenced by the pics Todd posted above.

As far as I'm concerned, I think it's time our hobby started to appreciate 4-doors.  One look at a nice example like our Monthly Feature Car, or George's clean '57 should be enough to convince most of that.

It's funny the stigma the 4 doors have here whereas in countries like Australia they were the norm. I guess it's because the 2 door usually has a sleeker look to it.

I think so, Todd.  I think most of us growing up associated 2 doors with high performance muscle cars and such, and 4-doors with our family cars - much less exciting to a car crazy teenager.

Overall I still prefer 2-doors to 4-doors, but there's much less of a gap between the two styles for me now.  Looking at these old cars from a nostalgia standpoint, seeing the 4-doors that my parents, aunts, uncles, or neighbors would have driven brings back a lot of great memories, and when looking at them through an adult's eyes I realize that some of the 4-door styles are quite handsome, or in some cases (like '55-'57 Chevys and Pontiacs) not really much different from a 2-door.  In some cases the 4-door version (especially some of the old 4-door hardtops) can be as attractive or even better balanced from a styling standpoint than their 2-door counterparts.

It's all about popularity and supply/demand I suppose, but I wish that more people could allow themselves to appreciate the 4-door more than they do.

Early pre-sixties 4-doors look much better style wise than latter ones in my opinion. Some early 4-doors make you take a second look, because they are designed to trick your eye into thinking they have 2 doors less.

I agree with all of Mark's comments on this subject. I for one always thought the 56 and 57 Chev Bel Air four door hardtops (sport sedan's) had a nicer looking roof than the two door hardtops and this is why i built a 57 version many years ago. Cheers.

Roof looks like it's off a 2dr ht and the doors are also. So they sacrificed a 2dr to build a 2dr???? Maybe they just had one lying around?hmm As stated...wonder which tag they are going to use.... Is there a build thread on it? No matter what...a ton of work!

I was assuming they had a 2 door that was rotten from the ground up, so they decided to use the upper bits from that car and the lower bits from the 4 door.

Was also wondering which VIN they will use as the 4-door numbers would raise some eyebrows on the 2-door (the 3rd and 4th digits of the VIN indicate bodystyle, "23" for 2dr ht, and "41" for 4dr sedan, IIRC), but those are the numbers that would be stamped into the trunk gutter and rad support on those cars (which they've used from the 4-door).  The trunk/rad support numbers are supposed to match the VIN riveted to the dash assy (which is removable from the car) and the sticker on the driver's door.

Either way, without proof of ownership of both cars and documentation of the build, it could be a numbers problem for future owners...
