I installed mine short, and made sure the gap was even all around. So far no leak. Good fix that ring though.

The way he explains it, it's gotta be true but I still find it hard to believe. I know so many guys who've done 12 bolts and never had issues with a leaky pinion seal..... Weird.

I just checked the GM warehouses. That seal has been 3924031 since my parts book was published in 1970. It's still 3924031 and it's still available. Both the GM warehouse in Montreal and in Willow Run Michigan have that seal in stock. So I don't understand when he says it's discontinued. 3924031 is not the part number for the truck 12 bolt, it's the seal for the car 12 bolt. Mark, are you saying when you did your's you used a GM seal and had to do that, or did you have a jobber seal?

Can you not still buy quicky sleeves. Used to be able to buy them for all kinds of applications.

But that won't move the sealing area to mate with the "new" (wrong) seal will it? Doesn't that just repair the grooved yoke?

Yes repairs the groove....then use a stock seal. Thought the problem was the seal was lining up with the groove. If you can't get a stock seal,is the one hes using too deep?(will have to watch again)

I got the impression that the seal was going too deep into the bore in the housing so the the yoke didn't quite catch the seal enough to seal properly. His solution was to move the seal out about an 1/8" inch or so. Not a bad solution but frustrating that you would have to do something like that.

Interesting... I just looked in the old parts book for 1/2 tons of the same era and it also is 3924031. That tells me GM did use the same seal in those days. I don't understand why the seals available now (the aftermarket ones he mentions) don't fit. I still think the GM 3924031 must fit correctly though.

When I did my 12 bolt, the guys on Team Chevelle who helped me set it up, told me to leave the seal out about 1/8", which I did.

It was a seal that came with a Richmond install kit. No idea of the part number.

This is confusing for sure.
