1962 Laurentian, Are the wiper motors the same as both Chevy and American pontiacs?
I'm not sure where to go next with my wipers. When I turn the switch on it takes a few minutes for the wipers to actually work, sometimes they don't come on at all.
Once they are on, if I turn the switch off they won't park until I shut the car off, then turn the key on again. I've disassembled the switch, cleaned it up, put it back together, and when I tried it for the first time they worked, on and off. I let it sit a few days and tried again and they didn't work.
Joey, the switch needs a clean ground to the dash, clean the switch and dash to get a good ground.
The wiper motor is the same as the Chevy, do you have a 1 speed or a 2 speed with washers? The 2 speed is the same as a 61, not sure if a one speed is the same but likely is, check the shop manual for information on troubleshooting. One common thing is old dried up grease inside the wiper motor, take it apart and clean it and replace the grease with white lithium. Post a pic and f your motor.

Hey Brendan, yep I did clean the switch up and it worked one time, and didn't after. I checked all the wiring. Checked the ground on the motor. All looks good.
It's a 2 speed with washer, Don. I'm going to remove the motor and get a look at it.
How difficult is it to remove? Got a diagram or picture on doing it?
This is frustrating as I know I could help but am away from my manuals and service information until the weekend.
In addition to great advice given, please check for dirty / burnt contacts on park switch within the wiper assembly. This will cause symptoms as you've described. Do this after old grease removed from
gears. Clean the contacts, lubricate the gears but try not to get grease on the contacts.
Going from memory within feeble brain, you'll not want to separate rear housing from motor unless you're confident you can get brushes / springs back in place.
Above mentioned gears and park switch should be accessible at / near where linkage connects.
*Sorry* Above so vague - if still outstanding by the weekend and I can help with proper details, I certainly will.
Uh oh. I know where I frigged up. I was looking for signs of something obvious and the wiring, and took the housing off the part of the motor that is accessible under the hood.
I have a feeling the springs and brushes are not in correctly.

I opened it back up to take a look and the springs are broken. I didn't even think of getting pictures. The springs are actually in several pieces. Maybe it's been done a while, thus the issues I'm having?
Can they be rebuilt? If looking for a replacement motor, am I looking for a Chevy motor, or did all the full size GM's have the same motor?
I would expect that any 62-64 Impala 2 speed wiper motor should work on your Laurentian. They have the same wiper orientation on the Canadian Pontiac as on the Impala (both sweep the same way as opposed to the crossover set up on American Pontiac with 2 speed wipers). The 62 Parisienne I used to own had what appeared to be a standard two speed GM wiper motor as used on the Impala.
My 59 Chevy and 63 vette had the same wiper motor, post a pic of yours. There is a guy in the us with a great reputation for fixing them, I can likely find a name. You may see them rebuilt on eBay but quality can be questionable. I have 1 or 2 old ones that have broken ears.
I think 59-62 Chevy and Cdn Pontiac are the same, plus the vette in 63+ to maybe 67. One for a vette will cost more. Don

In the meantime, use rainaway or something similar. It never rains in St. Johns anyway Joey?
