Ran this carb for a couple of years on my 350 Crate after switching out a 1406 in an attempt to get better gas mileage.

Really not much difference in the two but I understand the 1405 is supposed to have a leaner set up.

Top has never been off so Jets are original. More photos available

 Only modification was to establish a mount for the throttle.

Well I switched the carb over to EFI Tech fuel injection and now | can run regular gas saving as much as 15 cents a gallon. The initial cost is high

Ah, gotcha. I was thinking you were not happy with the fuel and wondered why. I burn it in all our small engine stuff, outboards, chain saw, mower, tiller etc.

How do you like the EFI? How did the installation go? Any hiccups?

Will keep a fuel log for the next month.  The efi needs to relearn about my driving styles etc.  Took a trip to St Catherines for the day 2 weeks ago and got 20 mpg with the Edelbock   Have fuelled up 3 times with a trip to Niagara Falls last weekend for a jazz festival.

Hi Cliff,

Been reviewing/researching these 'self learning' EFI systems for a while now in anticipation of purchasing one at some point. Just curious if you considered the other entry level ones out there such as FAST EZ-EFI or Holley Sniper systems? IF you did I would be interested to know why you chose the FITECH brand? I've generally heard nothing but good things about all 3, save for a few negative reviews, but more curious about long term reliability, parts availability etc.

I had an Edelbrock 1406 and was quite happy with it, though admittedly didn't keep a mileage log so I'm sure it wasn't much better/worse than any other carb.

thanks in advance for keeping us in the loop!

P.S. I wondered the same thing about the Shell Premium comment as Carl but was too shy to ask...lol

I never really researched this.

The shop that does my work on the Chev had installed about 20 of these units so there was only a cost hesitation but I bit the bullet as they say.

I came across and interesting article on the new edelbrock system.

https://www.rodauthority.com/tech-stories/engine/dyno-testing-edlebrocks-pro-flo-4-efi-system-on-a-junkyard-ls/

 It is a detailed read

One interesting project at the shop was a Triumph TR8.  The 8 cylinder model....  Man did the conversion ever light this one up.

The shop has been using an in the tank Mustang fuel pump where ever possible.  On my car the tank was too shallow for the Mustang style pump.   The fuel pump system was mounted on the firewall, with the fuel being supplied from the fuel pump, then the fuel was boosted to the necessary pressure.

A return line was then run back into the tank.

Hope this helps.

Cliff

what am I missing(?);
how does the method of fuel delivery change the octane requirement of your engines fuel?

Are you right at the edge, and adding a knock sensor allows you to get away with a lesser quality gas than you were able to run when running carbureted without a knock sensor?

I have understood that date that static compression and valve timing are the two principal factors in dictating what fuel you can use.

I have also understood that a properly set up carbureted engine will get the exact same mileage as a fuel injected engine;
EFI or TBI can offer better cold/start running, and once setup they require less maintenance than a carburetor.

Hope you changed all the rubber /neoprene hoses as ethanol will destroy them!!! 2 of our local stations here have told me "non ethanol" fuel will NOT be available SOON??? Ultramar has already started, high test is now 10% ethanol, & Island Gas said it's being "regulated" out, I'm try to find out if Provincial Federal or both

This brings up a good point;
I understand that there is a provincial difference, but I have understood that ethanol is not (supposed to*) be in Shell and Esso 'premium' gasoline;
I have heard that a select number of Shell stations do use ethanol in their premium pump gas, but I could not get any information as to which markets/locations had this.
I have been told on good account that the few Shell stations which use an ethonal blended premium gasoline, do clearly state it on the pumps.

I tend to prefer Shell premium gas because I have come to depend on the consistent quality, and lack of ethanol at any station i have filled at.

I have had people either outright lie, or give me untruth in their ignorance;
Petro-Canada does use ethanol in all their gasolines - but I suspect that some stations use an ethanol-free 'premium' - all the "94" gas pumps I have seen had a disclaimer that ethanol was a part of the blend.
I have also come to understand that you can count on all discount stations to have ethanol in all their blends.

Only certain ESSO stations have Ethanol free "high test", you have to check pump sticker or ask, some CTC [ crappy tire] are also Ethanol free as well!! Shell is your best bet!!!!

Used to be that all NS stations had ethanol free premium, in searching now, I'm not so sure.

Federal government regs says retailers must sell an average of 5% ethanol so some could have 10%, some have none? They also say:

Ethanol, and ethanol-blended gasoline, because of its ability to pick up water, cannot be transported by pipeline. Ethanol can be shipped by railcar or truck but must be blended at the terminal for those locations supplied by marine or pipeline. Dedicated tanks are required to store the ethanol and the gasoline-blending component with which it will be mixed. The handling of ethanol-blended fuels also requires modifications to other aspects of the fuel distribution system, including trucks, retail storage tanks and service station pumps.

I hate ethanol for anything where you are not burning gas all the time, like a daily driver. But my mower, outboard, snowblower, etc. its the pits.

Check where you buy for ethanol free, they may know or not if there is no ethanol in any pump?

Pretty good hijack huh?biggrinbiggrin

 Thank you for the extra information, sounds like they may have installed an Fitech Fuel Command Center or similar?

Either way, thank you.

Why 2 pumps and a return line? We've found that with a return line the fuel runs up to the engine compartment heats up and returns to tank,this can cause vapour lock. Could they just not put the pump near the tank with a regulated fuel filter?

Not sure why a return line, think it has to do with consistent fuel pressure to smooth out the fuel pressure?

The solid lifter high hp 409s had a return line.

Got this reply from FiTech re return  lines

Return lines are necessary because the fuel pumps put out more pressure then the Throttle needs . So the return line lets the excess fuel pressure return to the gas tank and also by keeping the fuel moving at all times it is harder to develop Vapor lock .

All of our systems require returns with a minimum 3/8 diameter fuel line.

Mate of mine in New Zealand put a duel fitech on his 454 atop a tunnel ram. He utilises the fitech fuel control centre. Best thing he ever did.

Just confirmed that the fuel lines are all stainless that i replaced last summer.  The fuel line from the engine block fuel pump to the efi unit are all areo quip fittings.

Your questions about the quality of the fuel lines had me asking Exeltec, where the installation was done.

Just shy of 700 miles since the upgrade.

Cliff,

I have been watching this thread closely.

I think fuel injection is a really cool idea.

Just not for my current car.

I am running PetroCanada 94 only because there is no ethanol in it.

Without letting the cat out of the bag,

I'm thinking more about a big block car that might be sharing my shop soon.

This was always my understanding on the reason for fuel return lines.  When considering vapour lock, remember some systems require vented gas caps while others do not.  Great conversation!  I never gave any thought to ethanol in the fuel but sure will now!!!
