Question is do these engines have an oil filter and if so where is it?

There should be one installed inside the engine.  You have to take the oil pan off to service it however it was advertised to last the life of the car without any service required!!!!  If you have a shop manual it will explain how it works.  Bob.

Bob, are you talking about the screen on the oil pump pickup ? GM dealers and parts shops all offered "by pass" oil filter systems for any motor. It was just a canister with a filter element in it that could be replaced. It usually was mounted on the intake manifold. This system did very little at best because it was not a full flow system. Some will say that some is better than none but a draw back is that this system robbed oil pressure, too much of it for my liking. Personally i just chose to use a good quality oil and change it every year. I have an oil filter on my 57 261 motor but it is there just for looks. Cheers.

Thank you guys and no I have none on the side of the engine, so it must be the factory fitted one inside the engine.

I will keep it the same as it has been good for nearly 70 years, just changed the oil and was good.

The filter inside the engine is the screen on the oil pump pickup. It is designed in a way that the sediment will settle to the bottom of the pickup and not block the screen. I feel that if the oil is changed regularly it shouldnt be any problem. Next time you drain the oil see if it is possible to slide a piece of stiff wire into the oil pan and see if there is sediment in the bottom of the oil pan. If there is a bunch of crap in there I would pull the oil pan and clean it out.

Dual quad Pete is correct, and I do have the shop manual which explains the internals of the oil spray, venturi and the fact that it clearly mentions that a filter is not required. I also agree that yearly oil changes is a good practice with this system.

I have attached a picture of the optional one that was installed on my engine, the yellow canister , which is no longer on the engine by the way.  Good luck with your choice.

What is really funny about this feature is that the guy who asked the question ( cadboy) never came back after my posting literature from the manual which answered his question. So much for trying to help a poncho guy?
