I worked as an automotive machinist back in the 70s. The head machinist, gray haired at that time, poured lots of Babbitt bearings. Cool to see. Definitely a lost art.

I remember my grandfather telling me about farmers using bacon rinds as bearings in old cars/trucks to get another trip to town during the depression and during the war because they couldnt get Babbitt.

1991 I took my model A block to Burford Ontario to pour new Babbit Bearings. Removed 2 60 over pistons and 2 80 over and replaced with 4 new 100 over. At the time I did not want a balanced crank cause it would not run like a model A engine

I was at our local car show this past weekend and a couple of local guys has a display of 10 old hit and miss engines. I asked one of the guys what he does for Babbitt bearings and he told me he mixes his own formula and pours them himself . He has to substitute some minerals for others as he has a very difficult time getting lead for the mix.

There was an automotive machine shop here when I was a young kid that did babbitt bearings. He had a fixture that would grind the Rod journals with the crankshaft in the car. He was popular with car lots at the time because on 216 Chevrolets he would grind the crank and then Babbitt a rod to fit the crankshaft. I didnt see it done, but he said that one he did the rod ended up .100 undersize. He knew it wouldnt last, but a car lot didnt care about warranty.
