Why not nowadays I thought the parents owe it to their kids to buy them a home.
Or at least pay half of it.

LOL, Millenials. Yup our oldest bought last year, they have to work for the rest of their lives to pay it off.

No grand kids I guess. 1200sq. ft house with a tiny lot for 450G

Our kids (daughter/son in law) just moved into this place a few months ago.

MASSIVE shop as you can see, plus some other large, nice sheds, 15 year old bungalow (I think about 1500 square feet), lots of trees, nice big pond to swim in, nearest neighbour about 1/2 mile away, longggggg driveway, and some change back from that $450K you guys are talking about. I love it, but our days on an acreage are over, otherwise I'd be jealous of them.  None of the farmland is their's, just the yard and driveway.

Nice place, but maybe 300 Gs here.

I wouldn't want that driveway in winter, but they are young and energetic.smile

On the open prairie those driveways stay completely bare, no maintenance. It's built up a little bit higher than the field beside it and it just stays clear. We had the same idea on our farm, only about 1/2 the length and in our 23 years there I likely didn't have to blow snow off it more than twice.

Wow, that's amazing!  Definitely not the case out east with all the wet snow we get.  You would need to own a plow if you had a driveway like that here.

Winter conditions not likely much worse than anywhere else in Canada, except perhaps Vancouver.

However this weekend's hurricane is predicted to pass quite close to that location, so one would want to see the post-hurricane pics!  confuse

When we moved to town I said no more toys for me, we don't have room.

I'm actually rethinking that statement now! They're less than 20 minutes away from here...

Yes, we don't often get wet snow like you guys do, although it does happen. When it did happen and we were on the farm we just drove through it for a day or two and then it was gone.

Real estate in this area has gone and continues to go crazy. Recent appraisal shows this house has double since purchased 13 years ago.

Sad part is... I could never afford to buy my place in todays market even if I had a 50% raise!!! How many stay at home moms or dads are there now a days?

Bump...and I thought it was nuts in 2019!!!!!! Just glad I bought in JR last year! Goes hand in hand. The lower the interest rate the higher the price. Thought the price jump in BC was nuts and then heard we are 7th on the list for house sales!! For sale sign one day..sold the next and for 50-100 over asking!!!!!! You guys to the East must be really noticing it!!

My friend is a real estate agent in Kenora, Northwest Ontario, the area where we have our cabin. He says these days his listings get multiple offers and if you "only" offer the asking price you'll likely lose out. He says whatever you think you knew about cottage prices, toss that all out the window.

Southern Manitoba real estate is booming as well.

I hate it, honestly!

X2 Owning a house should be a working mans privilege not a rich mans privilege. Going to say not most but  almost "ALL" new house sales have a rental unit so they can make ends meet. 1 mill average here in Vic...who can afford that!!??

Right now, the rich get richer and the poor get poorer. It's sad.

and the rental prices can prove it!!1700-3500 rent around here depending on what you want.  I couldn't afford that in a mortgage!!!!  Thinking..couple of cabins on the property for the kids and strata my lot. Only way they'll make it!!

While nowhere near as bad as Ontario and BC, real estate prices have really jumped here in the Maritimes. Folks from out of province (and country) are buying site unseen. I'm glad we got here when we did.
I feel bad for young people who want to get into a house. It's almost impossible.
