When were 6 digit odometers introduced?

Seeing the earlier post on the speedometer switch over to metric got me thinking.

When did the industry come out with 6 digit odometers ( 6 digits for miles or kilometers plus the decimal point )?

I've been checking out mid 80's stuff lately and regardless if it's in miles or kilometers all of this era seem to be 5 digits plus the decimal. Makes it tougher to decipher whether it has " rolled over " or not. Especially since kilometers rack up so much quicker.

I would imagine that it started the same time as the switch to kilometers. 100,000 km is 60,000 miles, so you would want that extra number.
That does raise a question though....The US cars are still in miles, do they have 5 or 6 digits?

My 04 Grand Cherokee is a US vehicle and it has a 6 digit odometer.
