How do You Tell Original From Repro Emblems

Today I picked up an SS427 emblem at the swap meet. How would you tell if its an original? It has a GM part number but on eBay theyre selling Repros bragging it has the GM number. The metal does seem stiffer than my trunk lid 2+2 repro. I didnt pay a fortune for it but would be nice to know if its an original. Either way its a cool wall hanger.

I've got original ones, in the next couple of days I'll dig them out shoot some pics of the reverse which may help you decide what you have. I usually look at things this way....its a rare car so how many were even made to begin. I do see them for $30 on line though listed as NEW reproductions and I saw one NOS at $99.

from my observations typically the reproductions will carry the part number (I think it's a thing to do with being an authorized GM reproduction part), they will carry a logo or abbreviation of the company which made them to separate them from originals.
Occasionally there will be a minute detail change with the reproduction (eg: 1970/1971 Firebird Formula/Esprit "nose bird" ornament).

My opinion is that you have an original GM badge there.

The originals are usually salt pitted unless they originated in Arizona or California.biggrin

But Fred you originated from the east coast. We havent seen much salt here until recently. And dont get me talking about that for I may get political. My originals on my 2+2 were faded but not pitted.

I checked my NOS one and it matches yours except where yours has the number "1" mine has a number "2".
I too have the General logo in the second "S".

I say it's an original GM emblem.

I have almost only original emblems in my personal collection;
I'd estimate that 99% of my emblems are from praries province cars, and none (that I have kept) are pitted.
I have also seen, held, and inspected many reproduction emblems;
I currently only have one set of repop emblems in my collection, I purchased them for my '73 Formula 350, when I was planning to convert it into a Formula 455, because I couldn't find original 1972+ 'Formula 455' emblems for a reasonable price - they have the same markings as my 1972+ 'Formula 350' and 'Formula 400' emblems, but have some additional markings, which I presume to be from the manufacturer;
I would have shared pictures before but I don't want to remove them from their packaging in case I decide to sell them (if sealed, they are unarguably brand new, but once opened, it's just my word).
