66 SD

Finally went and picked up 66 SD and brought it home.  I have a few questions I hope I can get some help with.  How many came with 12 bolt and how I tell if mine is original, (rear end tags are gone)?  How many came with in dash tach, (mine has it).  M20 on cowl tag does that represent Muncie M20 of just 4 speed floor shift?  D99 cowl code mean it had vinyl top or just the moldings?  Also is it PHS that I write to for documents pertaining to this car or GM?

Car turns out better than could of dreamed.  All original sheet metal with minimal rust, just missing typical hard to find emblems.  SD 1/4 script, trunk SD emblem, front fender gills, SD and V8 emblems for front fenders.  Someone had filled the fender holes and put Chevelle 327 tags on front fender.  It also had a few 69 GTO? parts in trunk that I put on Craigslist Vancouver, guessing at prices, but if anyone knows of good a home I would like to see them go to someone form this organization

All help greatly appreciated

Wow, that sounds like a great find.

My understanding is that M20 means just 4 speed. However, in the case of a 66 I am not sure there was a Saginaw available.

D99 is just the two tone/vinyl top trim.

For your documents I don't think PHS will help. You need GM Vintage Vehicle Services in Canada.

I am old pensioner and have trouble with all this new techno stuff. Half the time can't find where I have made posts etc .LOL
It is M20, D99, A51 car. in dash tach etc. No engine/tranny but I have stuff around here. Mist blue but now some ugly orange, interior has ugly orange velvet inserts on seats and door panels but will be new black interior. Went to see Tin Man late Sept. but he said all the Poncho guys were there first day and cleaned him out of all the good stuff we needed. (good friend is also doing an auto 66 SD now) We have bought of Dave for a few years and he told us about the crowd on the first day.
So many cars and so little time and space.

Good news is some parts such as gills are reproduced. ( I have some pitted spares I could dig out to sell if you dont have any luck.)
Congrats again.

It was different every year as to which Beaumonts received 12-bolt rear differentials. In '65 all 327 cars got them but for '66 no 327 cars got them. In 1966 only 396-powered Beaumonts got the 12-bolt. In '67 all 396 cars, plus 327s with M20 (same for '68). For '69 all Beaumonts with 350s or larger got them.

Do all big cars have L34 on cowl tag?

My understanding is that Beaumonts with the L34 would have it appear on the cowl tag. It makes sense since there were many subtle changes for the 396, like brake line routing up front for example.

Vintage Vehicle Services will provide information on how your car was equipped when it left the factory, for a price.

A Saginaw M20 would have the speedometer cable go through the firewall to the left hand side of the transmission. Only the Muncie went in from the RHS.

I have heard that 1966 Chevelles in the U.S. used the Muncie behind the 327 until around mid-production, at which point they switched to the new Saginaw. Who knows what happened at the Oshawa plant?

In '67 the U.S. Chevelles still came with a 10-bolt with a 327 4-speed initially, then phased-in the 12-bolts. In Canada it seems like the 12-bolt was used in that combo for the entire '67 run.

My memory tells me that the letter M does not stand for Muncie. The M code was used in the RPO (regular production option) to represent the M20 (standard wide ration), M21 (close ration), and the M22 (heavy duty close ration).  I am certain that someone will correct my memory if this is inaccurate.

Thanks for all the help. Is there anywhere that has production numbers of the various colours, options, etc. Example how many cars were ordered with the in dash tach? How many Mist Blue/Black combos?

I did swap the 275 hp 327 for a 65 L79 350 hp 327, swapped the saginaw for a Muncie and swapped the 10 bolt for a 12 bolt

Do you know for sure your car was a Saginaw and a 10 bolt originally Kevin? I don't know that I've seen or heard of a Saginaw in a 66.

Where does your speedometer cable to through the firewall? Do you happen to have a picture of the firewall?

From what I had heard below 300 hp got the saginaw. I bought the remains of a 327 Beaumont and it had the saginaw

This car has all original panels, rocker moldings, trim etc., and now I am missing, "gills", truck/glove box emblem, rear 1/4 script, and front fender v8 and horn cap. (it has a Chevelle wheel and cap now, but I have a cap just needs some repairs.. Did they come with "403' bell housings if small block.
Anyone make it over to, "Dave the Tin Man's sale". early enough to get any of the good stuff.
