Where’s the Best Place to get New Parts? (Canada)

Hey guys,

Just wondering for the folks in Ontario, where do you buy larger/heavier parts? I need to buy drums brakes soon For the 66 Bonneville.

I know for the smaller items Rock Auto has good rates on shipping, but for the heavier ones its expensive.

Also, do they sell brake line kits here too, like in the US? I cant believe the amount of aftermarket items OPGI has for this car!

thanks, Mike

Just called Napa. They don't carry drum brakes. Do I bite the bullet and pay the shipping from Rock Auto?

Dumb question, but does your 66 Bonneville have 8 lug wheels?

Mike, you need to start thinking that the cost of the part  includes having it your possession so shipping is a cost that you have to consider as part of the cost of the part. You also need to start thinking that exchange rate and import duties and fees is part of the cost too.

Now just thinking aloud here but you've got yourself a car that was never offered for sale in Canada, so it only makes sense that you will be looking stateside for most if not all your parts. This is a separate and distinct beast, not like a Canadian Poncho that can rely on plentiful and relatively cheap Chevrolet parts abundantly available here.

Finding parts is one of the most enjoyable pastimes of this hobby, it does take time and effort though. I'd be looking to the big Pontiac suppliers down south and the other big suppliers like OPG or NPD, your decisions have to be balanced between cost and how bad you want/need the part. To definitely answer your question, I'd say there is no one place that's Best, its a lot of research and weighing your options from a myriad of suppliers and other sources.

Thanks Ray! I'm thinking of sticking with OPGI and Rock Auto for convenience as well. OPGI I can place a relatively decent order and have most of the parts with them.
I was just curious if anyone knew in Canada where I can get parts, but like you said states would be my best option as it's a US car.
That won't sway my opinion of purchasing it though since it is my favourite car and that's what I will deal with then.

Amazon.ca has the 4 wheel cylinders if you need those. Free shipping so they would not cost much more than from Rock Auto I'm guessing, depending on Rock's shipping costs.

I don't see Amazon anywhere in his post

But then again, if I don't have my dollar store reading glasses on I miss a lot...

Amazon is a good option too, I've been surprised a few times with what they have.  They are especially good with late model cars.

It comes up with 68 Bonneville options. But no options for a 66. Is the 68 setup the same?

I think it would be a good idea for you to join a US Pontiac Forum:

Mike do you mean that Amazon have the listing only for 68? What I did with Amazon was take the AC Delco wheel cylinder part numbers from the RockAuto site and punch those numbers into the Amazon search bar.  That found them for me right away. Just keep in mind that RockAuto does sponsor this site so if you can buy from them it's better. Amazon doesn't do anything as far as sponsoring this site! You could always buy from Amazon and make a site donation here!!!

I purchased parts from Rock Auto and the shipping was really reasonable. My parts were already in Canada as Rock Auto has a warehouse I think in Mississauga. When checking out it will quote the shipping. If you think its too high just cancel the order.

I didn't realize they have a warehouse in Canada. I'll have to start shopping there more. Often I can get parts cheaper through my work but there are probably times where RockAuto is still better.

You don't indicate where in Ontario you are but if you're close to the border then shipping parts into a mailbox in NY or MI could prove beneficial.
Quite often suppliers offer free or cheaper shipping within the US and it may make economical sense to drive to the border crossing and retrieve the parts.

I've ordered from RockAuto a few times.  From what I can tell, the parts are actually listed by others, and sold through RockAuto.  As such, no RockAuto warehouse.   But I might be totally wrong.

Clint is right on, I was told that Rock Auto has set up relationships with a wide variety of suppliers. The parts are shipped directly from the supplier's location. I don't know how you can go wrong with Rock Auto, my last two orders this month are incredible:

Control Arms for DTS dealer wanted $505.02 each, Rock Auto $312 for both sides shipped from Bronx in two days.

Engine cover for Murano dealer wanted $122, Rock Auto $23 shipped from Tennessee in Two Days.

Thanks guys! I will also try the place in Hamilton.
I am in Ontario. Usually living in Mississauga or Welland area. And travel up to Barrie, Pickering, and Cambridge locations for work. So there is options if there is a parts place in one of those areas. Otherwise a Rock Auto it is.
And thanks for the Ames link as well..

Folks just keep in mind that sometimes......... not all the times. The super lower price reflects that it is a cheap off shore knock off. These lower grade Asian parts can sometimes be deadly, especially with front end and brake parts. I will always pay extra for U.S. and Canadian made parts over foreign crap because i actually value my life. Cheers.

George makes good points and I agree 100%, there are a lot of options on Rock Auto from very cheap to top level parts, still way less than anywhere else.

My two examples cited above were AC Delco Control Arms and the Engine cover is a plastic part but it actually came in Nissan packaging so it was OEM.
