Small Milestone in Life

Congrats on 6 months. My dad was an alcoholic and smoked a pack or 2 a day. Quit drinking cold turkey jan 1-57, quit smoking jan 1-67, never had a drink or a smoke again. In 1985 a friend asked him which he missed most, he said he could light up a smoke right then.

With all the nicotine in vaping products and all the young people using them, the addiction part of nicotine is really bad.

You decided to quit, thats what counts for you- keep up the good work. Dad took up eating chocolate.

Way to go Jim, Been over 34 years since I quit. Took up eating more after quitting, thing tasted better.

Gained a few lbs of beef, LOL. That seemed to taper off after a while. In the trade I am in, we have to drive lots of customers cars and

it's real hard to drive in the ones that smoke heavily in there car.

I know a guy who smokes two packs a day and between him and his wife a case of 36 Bud cans a day. To you guys who have recently smoked and bought a case of beer, how much would that be a month? I assume enough to have a nice mortgage?

Good for you! I'd forgotten about this. Glad you made it a year plus. Is it easier now than at first?

Don't even really think about it Carl. My wife still smokes...but it doesn't even bother me! I was the last guy on the planet that thought he could quit. Right behind my dad that smokes 2 pacs a day a quit cold turkey at 70.. Other than family this is probably one of the most proud things I've done. Determination to build a car last a year or two (and yes another addiction!) but to do something every 15 minutes of your life for 35 years and then stop. Well...just never thought I had it in me.....

Congratulations. Quit Oct. 14, 2001, and have not looked back. I wish my life partner would give them up, but...

Here's what the Government of Canada has to say about the real benefits of not smoking:

You will start seeing health benefits soon after you smoke your last cigarette.

After quitting, within:

  • 20 minutes - your blood pressure drops to a level similar to what it was before your last cigarette.
  • 8 hours - the level of carbon monoxide (a toxic gas) in your blood drops to normal.
  • 24 hours - your risk of having a heart attack starts to drop
  • 2 weeks to 3 months - the airways in your lungs relax and you can get more air into your lungs and breathe easier
  • 1 to 9 months - you cough less and your lungs work even better.
  • 1 year - your added risk of coronary heart disease is half than that of a smokers
  • 5 years - you have the same chance of having a stroke as a non-smoker
  • 10 Years - your chance of dying from lung cancer is much lower. So is your chance of getting cancer in your  mouth, throat, esophagus, bladder, kidney, and/or pancreas
  • 15 Years - your risk of coronary heart disease is  similar to that of a non-smoker

Congratulations, awesome accomplishment! I never did smoke but my mom quit cold turkey after 30+ years, best thing she ever did. Stay strong the hardest part is over!
