I saw the coolest nature event today!

I was driving along a quiet highway near home today, virtually no traffic. We have very little snow but in the ditch to my left there is a small strip few feet wide kind of on the angled side of the ditch that has a few inches of snow on it. As I'm driving a I see a beautiful completely white snowy owl in front of me swoop down and fly at pursuit speeds straight in line with the strip of snow only about a foot or so above the snow. I was doing about 65 mph and I am guessing it was likely doing a good 35 miles an hour. In maybe 1000' or so I caught up with it and exactly as I switched from watching it out the windshield to out the driver's door window, out came the talons, still flying full speed and it snatched a rat that was running along on top of the snow!!! SO cool, just a beautiful bird and doing a wonderful thing too! We were all going the same direction so the rat had no chance, no idea the owl was coming because the noise of my car would have drowned out any noise the flying owl would have made. Wished I'd had a video camera...

Well Carl, when Alberta and Saskatchewan become the Republic of Western Canada you'll be stopped at the border

before you can do that again...hmm.....the border patrol might even stop you from coming in with that "rat" motor in your Poncho.

I can't recall the last time I didn't have a rat in my garage. Just thinking about being rat free gives me withdrawl shakes.

Ya Know-I have trapped a lot of animals over my lifetime and can handle any of them-but regular rats are a serious hands off-just cannot stand them-they really gross me out. Snowy Owls are so so cool-just love seeing them-saw several today when I was out looking for coyotes.Funny when you drive by them and they have their backs to you and as you pass by the backside of them their heads swivel right around to see you!

We see the rats out in the wide open spaces when there's grain storage. Yuck, what a disgusting animal...

And yes, it makes a guy want to do laps around those owls to see how far that neck can go! It's quite a sight when they do that, almost looks painful!

My wife and I live in an area of Wpg where the original forest is preserved and there are walking paths throughout this wooded areas. We have noticed that when we are walking our dog, in the evening when it is dark, that there is an owl that we see quite regularly.

In this wooded area there are lots of the little cotton tail bunnies and no doubt this owl is feasting on these little rabbits. Often when we are walking, you can see this owl in a tree and he is watching us, and you can see the silhouette of his ears, and this owl is large. Its not white though, this guy is darker grey.

Also in this area we have some retention ponds and I was walking across a frozen pond which was covered with snow and there are tons of rabbit tracks, like a rabbit super highway and I look down and there was blood, and a trail of blood. So these little bunnies, that are greyish stand out like a sore thumb in the white snow and I think its easy pickins for this owl.

A little bunnie comes out of his hiding spot and is contrasted against the snow and I bet this owl swoops down in stealth and it's rabbit for dinner!

Those are Great Horned Owls Jake-the biggest in our province-they love cottontail bunnies! But have been known to take out cats and small dogs as well. We have a pair that nests behind our house each year-they certainly keep the bunnies in check around our house at least. Love hearing them talk back in forth in the evening-super cool. They have their enemies as well though-crows will gang up on them-sometimes if there are enough of them they will attack and kill them. The coolest owls we have around are the little sawhets and the screech owls-little guys-really cute owls-we see them catching frogs on rainy evening sometimes-they are about 10 inches tall.

We have an owl living near our place. I haven't seen him but do hear him at night. I like the sound they make.

Same here. Across the road in the woods. I've heard it for years now before dawn.

I always thought owls were cool.

I live in Toronto proper, yet last week I saw a fox crossing our street about 1 block from, our house. There used to be meadows between our street & Lake Ontario where the foxes lived. Haven't seen one on our street in about a dozen years.

One day years go in winter I looked out back and saw a bird of prey devouring another bird in our back yard.

We have a fox that trundles through our property from time to time. The first summer we were here one would come every day around 4:30pm and head right to our grape vines and start munching on the low lying grapes. We often hear Coyote's howling and see the tracks in the snow but I've never seen one on our property yet. There's also an eagle who has a nest on the river behind our property. There's a murder of crows that hang out here (Connie made a deal with them: they get our dinner scraps and they leave our garden alone) and if the eagle gets too close to our yard they harass her until she leaves.

 x2 on the species.

Also hawks, flickers, woodpeckers, snowshoe hares, weasels, red squirrels (no grey/black squirrels like in Ontario), chipmunks, rats, mice, raccoons, skunks, etc. One thing I have never seen as of yet is a snake.

I always thought of nature as 'pristine' when it actually functions as it would without the interference of people, though that state doesn't actually exist in many places anymore - we've influenced nature in just about every way conceivable, and usually not for the better.

Our new mouse-hunting friend (Northern Hawk Owl). They are one of the few non-nocturnal owls (excuse the fuzzy pictures):

Coming back to Wpg on the 75 Hwy last Saturday morning, I saw a bald eagle circling then landing at the side of the road next to a dead deer carcass. This bird was huge!

I must admit, I have never ever seen a bald eagle in early January in Manitoba ever before. Apparently this one is over wintering in sunny Manitoba!

But seriously, why is this bird here at this time of the year? They typically migrate south for warmer climate so I have to wonder if this is a sign that our winters are warming up?

When I was a kid we had no bald eagles around Morris, winter or summer. We only saw them in summer when we went to the cabin. Then we started seeing the odd one along the Red River in our area. About 15-20 years ago we started seeing them around our farm and shortly after that we would see them at the farm any old time of year. It seems a lot of them don't migrate any more. I see them around here now almost weekly, and same if I take a trip to the lake in the winter. About a year ago I took a day trip to the cabin in the middle of winter and saw 5 on that drive. Funny how a creatures habits change like that. We grew up "knowing" that all bald eagles migrated every year.

I've heard that migratory patterns of pretty much all birds have changed somewhat in the past couple of decades.  Probably affected by humans one way or another.

On a side note, I saw my first Cardinal in NS this past spring.  Seems they have expanded to the east as you wouldn't normally see them any further east than Ontario AFAIK.

 https://www.cnn.com/2019/08/07/world/earth-magnetic-field-reversal-scn/index.html

Many creatures have a so-called magnetic sixth sense.

Scientists have found that all plants and animals respond to the magnetic field of our planet. Say you're a whale trying to get up the coast of North America to where the good fish are in the spring, where you can fatten yourself up, breed and pass on your DNA. If you can't figure out how to get there, by navigating with the magnetic field, then that may affect your reproductive strategy. Similarly, some turtles need to go back to the very same bay in Australia in order to lay their eggs. The concern is that they won't be able to find that beach if they can't navigate by the magnetic field, and they may end up going somewhere else.
