Heard a while back that one reason rates were going up is that we are conserving Hydro

more than they expected. Hence they are losing revenue and must make it up with higher rates.

Last year we converted all lights (shop and house) to LED and our Hydro usage has been down as much as 30%.

Actual monetary difference is less than 20% 'but' we are using less.

Same thing goes for gas taxes. Municipalities are looking to start toll roads (eg DVP (Don Valley Parkway) in Toronto)

because people are using less gas and therefore less tax revenue - what will they think of next?..........no

It gotten way out of hand. My father in law has a place in Gaspe' Quebec, and the rates there are almost 60% less than here.

I can't wait to see their Electric car charger taxation scheme...

Not sure how are hydro rates here in B.C. will do heading into next year but I read this morning that our natural gas will cost less in 2020 for most customers. Saying cost of storage is the reason. I know it still costs me less than a thousand dollars a year for heat and hot water with natural gas. Hasnt changed much over the years.

This total reliance on electricity for everything in the future is scary...

What happens when for some reason it is shut down?

Geez......won't be able to wash your hands or flush the toilet, never mind drive your electric car or communicate with anyone.confuse

Clint, i wish i could respond but politics of any kind are no longer allowed on C.P.. Ontario is where most of the jobs are but that comes at a cost.

People complain about the hydro costs here in PEI but it's nowhere near the rates in Ontario. We pay 14.37 cents per KWH for prime and 11.37 cents for off peak. Our only other cost is a service charge of $26.92. Our car insurance is also half that of Ontario.
My property tax on a 1600 sq foot house on 8.25 acres is less than $1000.

Bernie, as you probably already know, that has been the case in Ontario for many years. It almost makes no sense to try to save and conserve because you get punished for doing so. I have been telling people this for many years and they just look at me like i am an alien. No matter what you do, you get screwed because the Ontario Hydro monster, is a monster with many heads that has been out of control since the 1980's. There has never been much incentive to try to fix the problem because when someone try's to fix the problem they get exterminated. That is as far as i am going to go because i know politics are out at C.P. Cheers.

It only stands to reason that Ontario insurance rates are so much higher than anywhere else. We have a far greater population and with that comes far more claims and far more fraud to mix into the equation. Land taxes........ well the cost to buy a home in Ontario, especially in the Toronto area is far far far more than other parts of Canada and with that comes more land taxes. Ontario's only rival for absurd home prices is parts of B.C. like Vancouver. As far as hydro goes in Ontario, it is very deeply ingrained in forty years of mismanagement with all kinds of different governments. The problem now with Ontario Hydro is so deep that it may never be fixable by any government of any stripes. Sure Ontario is a bit of a mess on so many levels but last time i checked it seems to be where most of the jobs are right now and it seems to be the place many people are moving to from other parts of the country. There is hardly a day that goes by that i do not see a vehicle with an Alberta license plate on it. Living and working in Ontario comes at a cost. Cheers. smile

I am sooo pissed at the Ontario Government. Why are our hydro rates increasing ?  We have all these turbines and all these solar farms that are producing power for free, and they refuse to slow down at the nuclear

power plants which are way more expensive to run and to dispose of all nuclear waste. Just last week I read an article that said Ontario has so much extra power that they sold it to the U.S. and to Quebec for next to

nothing, because it could not be stored.  Ontario lost 1 BILLION DOLLARS last year on the sale of hydro alone. You would think they could lower our rates, or give us a day a month or something free, even slow down

the nuclear plants to save money there, and quit shutting the turbines down because of the excess power, then they would not have to give away our power and lose 1 BILLION DOLLARS  a year. What a joke !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Leo, we can not discuss politics of any kind here on C.P. because it is for the greater good, but politics of the worst kind in the last forty years is why we have his mess today in Ontario. Try try try not to blame our present Ontario government for this disaster because this disaster has been brewing for forty years and it is a mess that has no solution with out some very league ramifications. No one has the guts to deal with it because if they tried................. they would be destroyed. Cheers.wink

Halifaxs water and sewer dept has a ditch tax, for those people who have their own well and septic, they are charging for upkeep on your ditch. No joke.

Municipal taxes are based on how much money they spend divided by your total assessments, it has nothing to do with what your house costs? It costs the same to support the municipal infrastructure for a 2000 square ft house in any province? They just charge you more tax because they can?

Since municipal government is non party related, is it considered politics?

In my old house, it was assessed at $330,000 and my taxes were about $2300. I had my own well and septic, my only service from the municipality was garbage. Snow removal and road maintained by the province. My taxes go up every year but my services, or lack thereof, never change. Taxes have gone to user pay for lots of things, but municipal taxes never went to payers use.

These politicians seem to forget that we on the sticks still have to pay electric to pump our water and to maintain our septic (pumping it out).....If we have trouble with our septic or well, we are on the hook. I also pay about $2300 taxes. For that I get to pay $2 per bag of garbage. The county is supposed to cut the grass along the road in front of my house (it is a steep hill)...They have never done it...I do....just sayin'

My sister lives in Scarborough [Toronto] bigger house all the services & pays $ 2700. My twp. of Scugog is implementing a 3 % road Levy [ read TAX] fot the next 10 years to pay for shortage of $$$ to bring roads up to snuff on top of the 3.8 increase for next year!!!! Only one pocket, & it's about EMPTY!!!!!
