Vintage Vehicle Services

After 44 years of ownership, I finally purchased the Vintage Vehicle Services information for my '64 CS.  Though I already knew the details regarding my Pontiac, I did find out that it was originally sold in Saskatoon.  The additional booklet of information makes for good reading too.  I believe this package is good value for the money spent.

I wonder if they could narrow down the number built with the 4 speed?

Good point, Todd. I wish I could find out how many of the Custom Sports were convertibles and how many were 4 speeds. If only 2915 of the same model number were ever made, I'd be curious to know the breakdown.

Speedometer Reducer Ratio Adapter.jpgspeedo_cable_route2.jpg

An RPO (Regular Production Option) speedo adapter is used to assist in correct speedo calibration. Here are a couple of pictures I found on the internet. I am certain someone on this site can tell us more about these adapters.

I never knew such a device existed. Just goes to show, you learn something almost every day.

This is a great service but the guys with 60's and 70's cars get more information than us guys with 50's and older cars. GM Canada started keeping better records of the vehicles they produced from the 60's onward.

Interesting to see the option for electric wipers. Does this signify two speed wipers? I am sure that vacuum wipers were gone by 1964.

Paul, you are correct. C14 means 2 speed electric wipers.

If I'm reading the sheet correctly 2,915 were V8 convertibles.  When you go to Model Number and look at the description it specifies CS V8 convertibles.  Love, Love, Love your power train, that would be a fun ride and sharp looking too!  Congrats.

That 327 300 and a 4 speed would have been a formidable car on the street in '64.

Almost bought the identical setup in a 64 Impala SS in April 64........just that close.......biggrin

Well I learned something as well,  I recently began work on my 1956 Studebaker Truck Project and today I learned what the little device is on the side of my transmission. it has the exact same RPO on it.

I'm still curious as to why the speedo adapter?

Is it the fact that the speedo drive gear will not support a driven gear (pencil) suitable for this cars rear end ratio?

I've read that the early Muncie's had a 6 tooth steel drive gear, and the only driven pencil available was a 20 tooth steel. If this is the case, then we know the reason for an external adapter.

Excellent post, David. Thank you so much for sharing this information. Is this number the combined total production numbers for 300hp 4 speeds including hardtops and convertibles? Or, is there a possible further breakdown of convertible and hardtops with this drivetrain? Thanks again for the post.

7467 is the model number of a 1964 Pontiac Parisienne Custom Sport Convertible. My understanding was there were 200 built. Although (I have no confirmation) I have heard the number of 130. Maybe if someone knows George from Vintage Vehicles they could ask him for clarification

I believe the speedo apaters were used when the assembly line tranmissions had limitations with the differential/tire combinations;
IIRC they were used into the early 1980's, I have a couple in my little collection - I intend to use one I have to correct the speedo for 3.90:1 gearing (from 3.55:1).
