The illness is self-limiting and symptoms can include fever and at least one of the following:
lack of focus in the presence of Pontiac vehicles
the inability to hear instructions of wives when under the influence of Pontiacs
impaired judgement when considering the purchase of such Pontiacs - victims can often be heard saying nonsensical things, such as "it won't cost much to restore this", or "I'll be able to have this on the road in time for next summer"
savant-like ability to rhyme off part numbers and option codes
It is not clear why some people get Likeallcars disease (cannot dislike any car) and some people get the milder Pontiac fever when exposed to automotive mania. It is also thought that some people who are exposed to old cars do not become hooked at all.
Transmission
While many sufferers of Pontiac Fever prefer a 4-speed manual, others have found the Turbo-Hydramatic to be quite satisfactory.
The disease spreads through the air from other like-minded Pontiac enthusiasts, though there doesn't appear to be a clearly understood pathway to either transmission preference.
Diagnosis
A Pontiac trivia test can diagnose sporadic cases of Pontiac fever. Most reported cases occur during car show outbreaks. Infected persons have also been observed scanning kijiji for 'good deals', even though they may already own more Pontiacs than they actually have time to drive.
Treatment
There is no specific treatment for Pontiac fever.
Treat symptoms appropriately based on clinical assessment of severity. For most people, this is a self-limiting illness, but for some there will never be a cure. Removal of all Pontiacs from the garage can often lead to more unexpectedly showing up.
Legionella bacteria live in the natural freshwater environments of rivers, lakes, streams and ponds. They can also contaminate hot and cold water storage and distribution systems, and water in air conditioning and industrial cooling systems.
The disease spreads through the air from a contaminated water source. Breathing in aerosols from a contaminated water system such as spa pools is the main transmission route.
