Hello

I am looking for a 1949 to 1953 Pontiac  steering sector complete with steering column and Pittman arm.

If you have one let me know where you are located and what your asking price would be

Thanks in advance

Hello Tim

Wow, On the other side of this great continent !!!!! I am in Bathurst New Brunswick,

I am collecting pieces to convert my original manual steering column to a powered assist system.
The problem that I have is that I am not sure of what is required to do this, and I don't want to disable the car.
My plan is to fabricate a parallel steering assist system on the bench, once tested and proven then proceed for the install.
Can I ask what you would want for yours ? You can PM me if you prefer
Regards
Dale

Dale, are you talking about that new age electrical power steering system that is mounted on the actual steering column. One of our very own C.P. members, (FITZ), told us about that system. What i remember is that it was very very nice but very very expensive. Is it the same P.S. system. Cheers.

Hi George

That is Correct, I have read a little about the Power Assist Steering systems, I am still learning. Apparently a lot of the big Manufactures ie Toyota use this technology.
There is a gentlemen not far from my home that drives a 1952 Chevrolet ( not sure of the model) but he configured his own variable power steering system using a Power Assist System out of a Toyota Tercel.
Apparently the units that are sold in the aftermarket use no amperage if the system is not being torqued, but when demand is called for it then draws current, How much , not sure.
I am still learning.
The primary issue that I have is with a very mechanical car, our 1950 , ( ie no electronics such as speedometer, ) I don't know how the Variable Power Steering makes adjustment for high speed steering versus the around town driving. ??????
Anyway I am acquiring parts and pieces getting ready to make an attempt at upgrade my wife's 1950 Pontiac Manual Steering

BTW, Merry Christmas to you and yours
Cheers Dale

Hi Darryl

Thanks for the response, fantastic lead article by Fitz, I am telling you , we have some real crafty people on this site!
Definitely worth a followup conversation with him for sure, this is exactly what I am planning on.
I guess every car will have their own issues though. Where Fitz located his actuator on our car it would be right in front on my main Fuse Panel ? and I am sure he located it there because he didn't want it over his accelerator pedal. In my case I have all three pedals to consider. All in All this is the complete package deal.
Thanks again
Dale

Hi Tim

Yup had a good conversation with Andre, as I mentioned below. The price he quoted me was not fixed due to the fact that all his Kits come in from France. He approximated the cost between $ 1950 to $ 2100

So, there is the currency exchange issue and brokerage costs that he cannot nail firm. I guess it works something like I place an order with a deposit and the balance before he ships it to me?  not 100% on this, that part of our conversation was vague to say the least.  He didn't elaborate. I gathered he none on hand.

As far as the availability of a good used one, no he has none, but did mention, that when I do find one that the gear box or sector should be completely disassembled, the end bushing should be replaced with a thrust bearing and the oil filler replaced with a grease zerk and finally use grease instead of gear oil. All good ideas.

We'll keep in touch, I am searching through eastern Canada, if not successful, I will get in touch with you again.

Thanks for the followup

Merry Christmas to you and yours

Dale

1949 to 1953 Steering Column Wanted

I can relate 100%, Original Owner sold it , no longer a Family operated facility.  That race track was one crazy place, cars were over powered  for the lap distance and turns were almost flat. It was called Danny's Speed Bowl,  we had some good times there for sure.
