Thanks Carl. I have no experience with these cars. It appears that they must bolt on. I was thinking, as unitized bodies, the inner fenders were welded in place.
Yes, you can unbolt everything and have nothing forward of the firewall. Structural integrity is not really a term for these cars. But they sure make great drag cars, nice and light!

This car was built when the Chevy II was new or almost new (with Corvette parts for road racing), and shows the black inner fenders. I had no idea it all just bolted on like that - I imagine you're right in that they weren't the stiffest chassis out there. I recall from my stock car days that a few guys tried to run these cars in the strictly stock class - but they didn't handle worth a darn - the later Novas ('75-up) pretty much dominated the class.
Anyhow, here's a link to the article that the above pic is from - quite a build-up for the time, but it was abandoned before it saw any real competition because the builder was busy developing the Cheetah..
