Little observation of nature and it’s questions.

Not having a garage to play in has turned me outside for entertainment. Always been intrigued by the little hummingbirds and I see a few around here. Went out and purchased a feeder and within minutes had a couple birds feeding. Goes great for about 3 days and then I noticed they would come and hover by the feeder and then fly away. Closer observation showed hundreds of tiny ants in and around the feeder. So did a little research and found ants dont like water. Thought Id make a moat above the feeder where it hangs from the tree. Took a spray bomb cap and an end from my hockey stick and hooked it up. Result has been great as they are back feeding and a half dozen ants are circling around the top hook. Thing that amazes me is how these hummingbirds and these ants can find this feeder hanging 7 in a tree. Mind boggling to me. I now have a pet that I dont have to take for a walk like my friends do.

My wife does something similar for the ants on our hummingbird feeders. Works really well.

Ants can live for up to 24 hours underwater. They don't take deep breaths like humans,  they have little breathing holes in their abdomens.

I can spend all day watching my humming birds and the grass grow
while enjoying a few beers.
