Canadian Cancer Driver Support

As a volunteer driver for the Cancer Society I thought this was Interesting.

Six years cancer free!

In 2019 Wheels of Hope Volunteer Drivers across Ontario drove over 7 million kms to help people get to cancer treatment.

Consider becoming a volunteer driver even if it is only one day a month.

Your effort will be appreciated in many ways.

Cliff

Do you need a special drivers licence? (i.e. class 4 - taxi, or?)

Good on you for doing this.

I had to take an information class more about the passengers and picking them up. There was also a basic first aid portion to the class Just a valid drivers licence with one million insurance. You often get a list of pickups by email and it is up to you to confirm a pick up time. When the appointment is completed they usually call your cell for a return ride. The scheduling is quite good so you are either picking up or dropping patients off. Send an email to the Cancer Society in your area and they will schedule a information session

Some patients have difficulty getting into Van's and SUVs. There are those that have mobility issues and use walkers or canes. These parameters are usually handled by the transportation co-ordinator.

Thanks Mark

When I had my cancer treatment I had 12 treatments of radiation. Living in Oshawa I didn't need the driver service.

Some patients have both Radiation and Chemotherapy so there is a possibility of as many as 30 or more treatments.

Some patients are from out of town and they have the option of staying in a local hotel as there treatments are daily.  Patients need transportation from the hotel as well.

Depending on the patients health they may need an escort to assist them.

The cancer driver does not provide this assistance.

As a driver I may have picked up the same person 4 times at different stages of their treatment.

There is a huge demand for drivers to take patients into the many cancer treatment centres in Toronto. I have even taken riders to Newmarket for their treatment.

I figure that my involvement was simply payback for the treatment I received all those years ago.

I'm ready to drive anyone wherever they need to be when the timing is right for me Cliff. And I won't take the pay for my mileage (they will pay it for those wondering), perhaps just the tax receipt.

I figure this is a good place for me to volunteer, my family, like most has had it's share of cancer troubles.

That's great! We have folks here in PEI who are retired and volunteer to take patients to the hospital in Halifax for treatments.

I might have to check into doing this after my upcoming retirement. It's a good cause.

When my brother dealt with cancer his church really looked after him well. His chemo took place about 40 minutes away from here.
