Could the end finally be near for mankind as we know it. By the way i am not trying to be funny in any way here. Sure no one wants to ever believe it but the reality is that one day mankind will end. Could it now be sooner than latter.

Not with a 3% mortality rate.

Influenza has claimed 18,000 lives so far this season in the USA and 310,000 hospitalizations, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Is COVID 19 serious, Yes,  so I am not making light of the potential if we are not vigilant.

 Exactly.

Like the flu ... it has the worst effects toward the old and the weakened.

All you can do is not put yourself at risk, and wash your hands well.

I worked for the government in Toronto during the SARS outbreak. I came in contact with "the front line" at Citizenship & Immigration, so I was assigned BOXES of face masks. I still have those masks (I use them for dusty jobs). If worst comes to worse, I will donate them to a worthy cause.

NHL set to make some sort of announcement tonight. Stand by and fasten your seatbelts. initial intel says no suspension yet.

2 minutes ago - aware of NBA decision and monitoring closely - update tomorrow after consulting medical professionals.

Athletes should be fine considering the shape these guys are in. It's us old guys or people with immune system issues who have worries.

I think the issue is the whole social distancing concept at large gatherings. But a lot of body fluids are exchanged during an NBA and NHL game between players in close contact making the chance of infection greater.

Absolutely, team sports. sweating all over each other, tons of contact with each other, perfect scenario for something contagious.

If the NHL goes through with the shut down..................... well you know this is freaking serious and we should all take note and stop comparing this illness with other illness's that are suppose to be worse and some how do not have the same attention. confuse

It's a toilet paper pandemic George.

One person sneezes, and 1000 shit themselves.

It's serious if you are old and not in good health, or you are a person who has issues with your immune system.

We had the same warnings back when the swine flu hit. My brother got it, he was 61. It had him down and out for better than a week and took him a couple more weeks to get back to speed but he was never in danger of losing the battle.

Part of my job as general manager of our honey company is delivering to the large grocery store chains. I was at a local big grocery store talking to the grocery manager this morning.  Toilet paper sold out. Rubbing alcohol and sanitizer out. Bleach low. Vitamin C almost out. Half the staff is off with pnumonia. They are sanitizing the store three times per day.
Our company got an email addressed to all vendors from a large grocery chain. We are all expected to deliver our products no matter how bad it gets.
On the bright side our honey is flying off the shelves.

Well, it's certainly a hot topic now, and as expected through talking with people I know and from what I read on the internet, there is a vast range of opinions out there.

Many people I've talked to tend to think it's nothing to worry about, and that it's being overblown by the media.  People on the internet are all over the place on it, and of course are quick to discount the views of others who don't agree with them (not talking about this thread, but on other forums that I read - not all of them automotive in nature).

When I look at the coronavirus dashboard, here's what I see:

Total Confirmed: 127,749

Total Deaths: 4,717

Total Recovered: 68,307

IMHO, the only solid data that we can use now is for deaths and recovered.  Total confirmed includes many cases that are as yet unresolved, so we can't use that data for percentage of deaths because those unresolved cases haven't met their end point (death or recovery).

So if you just use death/recovery stats, so far 6.46% of the total of those cases have resulted in death, not 3%.

That being said, there are many other factors in play.  You can see the stats vary greatly from country to country, and that can be due to the percentage of elderly people in their populations, the quality of health care in that country, their ability to test and report the results, political reasons for reporting or not reporting, etc. etc.

I think all we can say at the moment is that it's serious, and should be taken seriously.  There are a lot of unknowns still, and indications are that this will be more severe than SARS.

So everybody should be taking precautions - wash hands/use hand sanitizer, do not touch your face, keep your distance in public places if possible, try to avoid crowded situations if possible, etc.  The way I look at it is that I would rather be overcautious and be laughed at than to not take enough care and get sick and/or transmit it to others.

In terms of the rush on toilet paper, I really don't understand that at all...

 Google: psychologist/toilet paper/corona.

Buying TP gives some people "control" over the Covid 19 situation.

Ya, young athletes (and young people in general) will be the incubators and transmission hosts.

I think the in the coming weeks is that people expect to be confined to their homes for a long stay. And they don't want to be caught without TP.

It gives them control over their poop situation, but nothing else... wink
