Automakers shut North American plants over coronavirus fears...except.....

https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/windsor/ford-gm-covid19-close-factories-1.5501927..

Despite the plant closures by other automakers, electric vehicle maker Tesla Inc.'s assembly plant in Fremont, Calif.,

remained open Wednesday. Production continued even though Alameda County on Tuesday night declared it

a "non-essential business" under the county's shelter-in-place order.

Seven Bay Area counties have ordered nearly seven million residents to shelter in place for three weeks

and ordered businesses to send employees home in order to slow the spread of the coronavirus.

Businesses that can remain open include pharmacies, banks and supermarkets but not electric car manufacturing.

In an email to employees, Tesla Human Resources said the company does not have final word from city, county,

state and federal governments on whether the plant can operate.

Tesla has conflicting guidance from different levels of government, the email said.

The note said production workers should still report for work unless they aren't feeling well.

If that's the case, they should use paid time off.

The email said there would be further communication Wednesday night.

Are the Canadian plants still open? As of a day ago a friends of mine (one at CAMI in Ingersoll and one at Toyota in Woodstock) were still working.

Teslas CEO Musk has said

he believes widespread concern about the coronavirus was overblown.

My frank opinion remains that the harm from the coronavirus panic far exceeds that of the virus itself,

he wrote in an email to staff on Monday.

Not wishing anything serious on anyone but it would be nice if someone close to him could get a mild case of it to bring him to reality....

From a source close to Toyota Canada....

"Theres more to it than the COVID virus, its also about parts supply.

Panasonic stopped shipping radio/gps units earlier this week, and Panasonic Texas most likely will stop shipping backup cameras etc soon.

Toyota was backed into a corner by being the last manufacturer to announce the shutdown for employee safety and factory cleaning/sanitization.

As the parts supply chain is stronger than the other manufacturers, it will only take 2 days to clean the factories whereas the big 3 will take 2 weeks and Honda 6 days.

I expect more cleaning days later as the Chinese electronics supply completely dries up.

Because Tesla has such a low production volume they dont need to "clean the plant."
