Until now I never saw the Breedlove attempts though they are documented in magazines. I do remember watching Gary Gabelich on the Wide World of Sports back in  October 1970 set the record.

There was a funny story back in the day when Breedlove was flying over the salt flats.

Captain announces over the PA they were over the salt flats and Mr. Breedlove was on board

and had just recently set a land speed record.

The captain then said he must apologize as the 727 they were in was only making 550 mph ground speed

and Mr. Breedlove had gone 600+ mph on the salt.

Many memories here from all the much car magazine coverage of those amazing attempts by drivers like Craig Breedlove and my favorite Art Arfons. I followed Art Arfons life as a builder and driver, from my childhood until Art's sad passing.

Sort of on-topic.

I recently picked up a set of Will's Tobacco cards from the 1938 that document the fastest air/land/sea vehicles at the time, some are land-speed record breakers. They have nice illustrations:
