The Battle of Vimy Ridge - April 9, 1917 : April 12, 1917. Painting by Richard Jack
Widely regarded as the day a nation was formed. Today my mind is turned with pride and gratitude towards my two Grandfathers and the sacrifices that were made not only by them but by all their Canadian brothers and sisters here and abroad. And similarly like that Easter 103 years ago we are in the midst of our own struggles and sacrifices against an invisible yet deadly foe. And like our forefathers before us, we will prevail and there will be cause for rejoicing and celebration in the weeks ahead. A day and a time to give thanks.
Well said Ray.My grandfather fought at Ypres and was seriously wounded at Passiondale. The older I get the more I respect the incredible sacrifices these great Canadians made.
Kevin I so absolutely agree with you, I marvel at the thought that these two men in my life would take me by the hand and go get a hair cut or mix me up a lemonade on a hot summer day, arms around me , hugs and pats on the head, buy me my first pair of hockey gloves yet inside them the things they did, the things they saw, just so I could get a hair cut and drink a nice cold lemonade. No words really.

My maternal grandfather, though being British, fought with the Canadian forces in WW1
As such after the war he was given a parcel of land in Northern Ontario on which he homesteaded.
Unfortunately, he sucumbed to lung failure due to the terrible gases used in combat long before i came along, so never knew him.
