Sorry to hear about these tragic, senseless killings. My heart goes out to all involved. People are going through enough

right now, and now this. What the Hell is going on??

That story was painful to read.

Our next door neighbour husband/wife are both RCMP constables. As I'm getting to know them (last 2 1/2 years here) I start to worry about them when I see them head to work. He's a BIG boy, just a great guy. A few weeks back he and two other officers attended a call about a situation involving a couple "kidnapping" their own child who was in foster care. When they arrived they were attacked by a large group, I think about 8-9 people. He was banged and bruised a bit but nothing enough to keep him off work. I can't imagine the thinking behind attacking a guy his size carrying guns. The attackers are lucky to be alive. Attacking a police officer would be a good way to eat some lead.

It is becoming harder and harder to figure out what drives some people.
Way too many of these senseless acts in our society.

The news is slow coming out on who was killed but what motivates this sort of thing. A made up rcmp vehicle and a fake uniform.

A dark day in Nova Scotia.

On CNN, Wolf Blitzer asked a CNN affiliate reporter in Ottawa if this type of thing happens in Nova Scotia often.no The Canadian reporter shot back, "This type of thing rarely happens in Canada"!

More like a Canadian imitating an American...

I really don't have words to describe how I'm feeling about this now.  It hit pretty close to home, but no matter where it happened I'd probably feel the same.

I have a friend who lives not far from the area where it started, and some of the info he gave me that he heard from locals is pretty crazy, and pretty sad.  I don't want to repeat it in case they are just rumours, but if true it will all come out in the news eventually anyhow.

I'll leave it at that.  It's incomprehensible to try to understand how somebody justifies taking multiple innocent lives in their own mind, but I hope I never really understand it.  It's just sickening.

Yes, the preliminary reports on CBC give hints of pretty crazy and surreal rampage. I was put into shock when I heard some of the story reported ... my Wife and I have traveled through that beautiful, quiet countryside.

The mourning and healing for the affected families, friends, and communities will be very hard to deal with, with social distancing in effect.

Yeah, even those of us who are not directly affected, will still be affected in a very personal way.

It's going to be hard to deal with my feelings of anger towards this individual to think he felt like he had the right to take peoples' lives away from them for his very selfish reasons.

Now 19 including the shooter. No news about many of the victims, only about 10 names out now, most seem to have no connection to the shooter. It seems he shot random people for no reason other than wrong place, wrong time. No mention of his family so there may be acquaintances and his wife, RCMP have said some victims were random some not.
There may be more victims........

Hard to know how to prevent people like this from doing these mass killings. Its like the pandemic, we have not spent the time and money on planning for a pandemic by having enough masks, PPE, ventilators, testing protocols. We never had one this big and deadly before.

With shooters, I dont know if more mental health workers, less guns and bullets, or what we could all live with as an acceptable control. I have no problem with guns, I just dont know how to keep someone like this from using them to kill people.

Some stories coming out now. Where this happened was in small rural communities where you know everything and everyone, like where many of us live. Seems like he likely had a grudge against some people and he started by killing them, then went on to settle some old scores maybe. Then just started killing total strangers at random.

He had a fake rcmp car and an rcmp uniform. He killed one lady out for a Sunday morning walk. 2 VON nurses likely out on Covid 19 work. He set fire to 5 properties and when a neighbor who was a firefighter arrived, killed him. Most of this was done in the uniform and the car, he looked like a cop. It seems like he had some kind of bombs or Molotov cocktails. They are not sure how many more he killed as all the homes burnt to the ground and they are searching through ashes.

In a small rural place where peoples first instincts when they see a problem is to offer help, this fellow when around dressed as a cop shooting people. Sounds like a real cowardly person who Was shooting like he was in a video game, but with no opposition.

My sister and her husband live in Nova Scotia (husband born/raised there). She's been emailing me all day. Her husband has relatives and friends of several victims. An elderly lady who lives next to his mom lost her granddaughter. The grandaughters husband was also killed. Both were correction officers.

Too sad and sickening to contemplate. I cannot understand what would motivate someone to do this. Thankfully very rare in Canada, unlike other countries which will not be named, but once is enough and my thoughts are for all of the victims and their families. I've spent a lot of time in Nova Scotia, made some good friends there and experienced the goodness of many Nova Scotians when my daughter fell very ill three years ago while attending university in NS. Never would I have expected that an atrocity such as this would occur in this friendly and beautiful province.

As others have said, it is sad and sickening to hear this news. A lot of people will have questions about how and why this has happened, and I guess some answers we will never get. My condolences to all who were affected by this horrific act of violence.

Up to 23 now including the shooter. He seemed to enjoy the power of the police officer and the gun. He stopped people for no reason and shot them point blank, likely for the thrill.

Posing as a law enforcement officer. What a POS.

Maybe they should look into the details of the resale of old law enforcement vehicles or even the "cloning" of a law enforcement vehicles.

I saw many ex-RCMP vehicles come into our government Crown Assets auctions with still a lot of the law enforcement modifications in place. We would have to remove them, and then call the RCMP to come and retrieve them.no

I haven't been trying to follow this sad & sickening story too closely, because it just makes me think of how much the senseless U.S. way of life seems to be now pervading Canada. It makes me sick.

Here's some insight as to how he could have recreated an RCMP cruiser:

https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/nova-scotia/ns-shooting-rcmp-vehicle-1.5539877

I always thought there were laws in place to prevent this sort of thing from happening, but it sounds like this is an area that will have to be tightened up.

As far as decommissioned cruisers being sold, I'm not sure if that would have stopped this, although from what you're saying Darryl, they have to tighten up on their decommissioning procedures - sounds like they could be a little slack.  I think that anybody with the will could make a fake cruiser from even a garden variety Taurus, or SUV.

From the article I posted above, it suggests that this guy bought a brand new 'service car' from Ford.  I have seen other police-appearing cars being used for other purposes, for example our local transit authority has one with an amber light bar as a supervisor's car.   Where he got all the appropriate RCMP identification is not clear, but it was obviously doable, as he did it.

From everything coming out, this guy was a piece of crap, and has been a mean, calculating SOB for many many years.  It's just too bad that somebody couldn't have put the puzzle pieces together before he went on this rampage... disbelief

I wonder if the photo of the suspects car is the actual car or if they took a stock photo of a new car and photoshopped the graphics. It looks a little iffy as the graphics (mostly) seem sharper than the rest of the car photo.

So he decorated the car while it still had the window sticker on it?
