Driving your antique car in Nova Scotia

Someone posted this on Facebook today. I can't confirm if this is true but it wouldn't surprise me:

A heads up for those who might be buying a new to them antique car in NS, you won't be able to plate it at the moment or drive it, I tried to renew my stickers on an antique plate and was told if it weren't essential travel vehicles they weren't' registering them and those caught driving an antique auto could be fined.

My renewal date for my Collector plates was in early February so Im good for the summer. I will be driving them in this week to fill up the tanks with cheap premium fuel and might toodle around a little bit. I dont see driving them being a problem and havent heard anything about restrictions. Gathering with others is a no-no.

What I understood is here in Ontario you can run with out date plates for now. Plates here cost you the full amount no matter when you buy them so province will not lose any money on deferring payment

I would think that if the car was registered with regular plates in Nova Scotia they'd renew it.

25° here today, doors and windows open. I've been hearing Harleys all day, so I'm sure they can buy and/or renew their insurance!

I posted elsewhere that NS is extending license plate stickers until August and have informed law enforcement not to ticket out of date stickers at this time, but I'm not sure about the Antique Plates.

The deal here is that they requested that people refrain from going on pleasure drives, but vehicles with antique plates are only allowed to do pleasure drives - so if you are out with a vehicle with antique plates you are breaking one rule or another.  An old car with 'regular' plates should be no problem, though.

I'll have to look into it further to see what I can find out when I get an opportunity.

The plates on 2 of my antiques and a summer daily driver had expired last November so I renewed them online on April 3rd. Printed off the temporary form which was supposedly good til April 17th ( 2 weeks ) giving time for the sticker to be received in the mail. Well it's the 21st and no stickers yet. While I haven't yet, I won't hesitate to drive any of the 3 should I have an occasion to.

Here's what I found on the NS site:

Non-essential services

Non-essential Registry of Motor Vehicle services (like buying handbooks or getting personalized or antique licence plates) are unavailable until further notice.

Temporary (Vehicle) Permits

Temporary (Vehicle) Permits that expire in March 2020 or later are extended until 31 August 2020.

Vehicle registrations

Vehicle registrations that expire 31 December 2019 and later are extended until 31 August 2020.

NS antique plates all expire dec 31 each year, as do trailer plates. I just did my renewal online on the 63 with antique plates and my boat trailer, stickers arrived in the mail last week. I plan on driving the 63 on warm days, havent gotten around to replacing my leaky heater core so no heat at the moment.
Antique plates are legal for parades and events but also for maintenance and repair trips. Ive never been stopped in my antique cars for any reason, other than at road checks where they stop all cars. The police have asked me if its ok that I dont have a motor vehicle inspection sticker or seatbelts, most are not too familiar with unique rules that apply to old cars. Nor do they seem to care about the rules, they give you a thumbs up and enjoy the Big GTO just like everyone else.

All motor vehicle registrations that expire dec 31/19 and after are extended until Aug 31/20 as are drivers licenses so I didnt need to renew my plates until then. The mv site says you cant get new antique plates or do a drivers test and get a drivers license.

Depends on where you are, Don.  I've heard of people locally who were ticketed because their antique-plated car was spotted parking in the same spot every day or commuting, etc.  The laws are in place, it just takes an officer who is paying attention to act on it.  To me, the savings doesn't seem that great for antique plates to be all that much of an advantage.  Sure, safety inspections are a pain, but I don't want my car on the road if it won't pass an inspection anyhow.

Guess were lucky here in Alberta, got my antique plate over 20 years ago for a one time fee of about $28 if I remember correctly. Been staying home for about 6 weeks now, only going out for groceries once a week, wife is able to work from home. Had to cancel my retirement/birthday trip to Hawaii that was planned for a long time, but itll be there when this is over. Fired up the Beaumont last weekend for the first time this year, that was nice :) And yes, when they finally clean up all the sand and maybe fill a few craters on the road, I do plan to get out for a pleasure drive.

Have had mine out a few times, once for a spring shake down and broke it, LOL. Another time for a Hospital cruise by, Police escorted.
Yes it has Collector plates, but having an issue with driving it right now is kind of being a little anal on the Police part. In BC you must have another vehicle
registered before they all give collector plates.
