Gas Prices

Even though we think gas in Ontario  right now is cheap, the price of a gallon of gas in Port Huron is $1.21 U.S. and here in Owen Sound this morning .078 per litre. If my math is correct

4 litres = 1 US gallon so .78x4= $3.12 per gallon Canadian and US @  $1.21 X.35 cents dollar conversion = $.43 cents so $1.64 cents Canadian

$3.12- $1.64 = $1.48 difference!!!!!! The gas companies are complaining that they may go bankrupt. Could we consider some GOUCHING HERE ? JUST MY THOUGHTS.

Unfortunately even if it were 5 cents a litre, we still couldn't use it.

The "gouging " isn't quite as large as $1.48 Canadian per U.S. gallon.

The tax in both places needs to be considered in order to be fair.

In Michigan the gas tax is 18.7 cents state tax and 18.4 cents federal tax..... 37.1 U.S. per gallon

So the tax per liter (rounding out to 4 liters per U.S. gal.) would be 9.3 cents U.S. or 13.2 cents Canadian per liter.

In Ontario the tax on one liter of gas is

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motor_fuel_taxes_in_Canada

Federal Excise tax - 10

Provincial Excise tax - 14.7

Federal Carbon Tax - 6.6

Total Pre-Sales Tax - 31.33

Total with 13% Sales tax - 35.4 per liter in Ontario.

So the difference between Ontario and Michigan taxes is 22.2 cents Canadian per liter.

4 U.S. quarts (1 U.S. gal.) = 3.785 liters   or

4 liters = 4.23 quarts.

1 U.S. quart of gas = 30.2 cents U.S. (1.21 a U.S. gal) and is 43 cents Canadian.(today's exchange)

Cost of Michigan gas in Ontario (1 U.S. gal.)=4.23 U.S. quarts x 43 cents = $181.89 Canadian per U.S. gallon

To be fair the tax would have to be removed to see true difference.

Cost of Michigan gal. gas without taxes in Canadian dollars = $1.20

Cost of Ontario 1 US gal. gas without taxes = $1.704

Therefore the difference between the gas prices is 50 cents Canadian a U.S. gallon that Ontario pays more than Michigan.

Or in Liters the difference would be 12.5 cents Canadian per liter cheaper in Michigan.

..So there is a difference between the two places that could be considered gouging by the oil companies,

but the tax that Ontario (and everywhere else in Canada) pays for gas is far more times worse than what those in Michigan pay.

What's really upsetting about the gas tax here is the tax being charged on the tax......give me a break with that kind of taxing.

 Taxes and OUR gas indeed!

I worked 15 years for a tank trailer manufacturer and our single largest customer was the refinery, less than a mile from our door. We're also quite close to the US border, so OUR oil, refined in OUR refinery, is trucked to American customers in OUR trucks. Think about that for a minute...

They buy our finished fuel products. Finished. They don't have to refine it, grade it, mix it or formulate. It's all done here to the customer's specs. Our weak dollar provides those customers with a cheaper finished product than they can produce themselves... BEFORE taxes even enter the picture...

I saw gas at 80 cents a litre in Kingston today. I filled up at Canadian Tire for 73.4.

79.9 in Eastern Fraser Valley BC, hasnt been that low since early 2000s if memory serves. Too bad its having such a negative impact on those that work in the oil industry.
