New Trend: crewcab instead of 4dr sedan

What is with this new trend of refering to a vintage car 4 door sedan or sport sedan as either a CrewCab or a Quad Cab.   man does that terminoligy ever piss me right off!

I have never ever heard this term used on a sedan in my entire life and i have owned many 4 doors.  Then i see and hear it multiple times in the last 6 weeks.

This new trend has got to stop.

Have classic car guys gotten so use to seeing only 2dr HTs and convetibles, that they dont even remember that all these classic cars were built as 4doors too?

I would say that generally Classic Car hobbyists make up such an infinitesimal part of the over demographics in North America combined with the fact that the collective knowledge of history of this country is what people are fed on their citizenship test and application, not to mention say 1970 was 50 years ago. So yes "they" don't know and apply terms that they know today when seeing one, if they even notice it.

Yeah, I find it annoying too, but I also find 'moredoor' annoying as well.

There are all kinds of terms floating around in the hobby that are not historically correct, but I just have to remind myself that others are probably not as deep into the history of cars as I am.  I am surprised often that even some classic car owners don't really know much about their cars, they just got them because they thought they were cool - which is alright as long as the enthusiasm and respect is there.

Nowadays, with trucks being so popular, and actually family vehicles in many cases (something I would not ever have imagined 20 or 30 years ago), crewcab seems like a natural progression to relate the old cars to something that most people understand from today.  I don't like it, but I'm not going to lose sleep over it - next year there will be some other new term that becomes popular, and so on, and so on...

First I saw of it was Roadkill Garage last year or so, Freiburger called the 4dr chevelle project they have, the Crew Cab Chevelle.

I haven't heard this term yet of a crew cab classic. Mind you, I don't get out much.

Does it really matter? As 73 SC points out, demographics are driving current car trends and younger generations generally do not care about many of the things that ours does because that history predates them.

So true and I accept. I was talking about Billy Bee Corn Starch Hockey pictures this week, my daughter in her 20's said, why would anybody mail in labels from corn starch just to get a picture of  an old hockey player glued on a piece of cardboard?  It is just not explainable to her.

Some nicknames stick and others don't, ie  shoebox, tri five, square body, beetle, deuce, cornbinder, fishbowl, etc. Crossover came and went in a hurry. Suv seems to be used less and less too. By the way, anyone know where the term car originated? Aren't most vehicles made today just stubby station wagons?

I love it.  I just thought of this now,  i am now going to refer to SUV's as "fakestationwagons"      Espesially since i own 2 real 60's station wagons.

Careful Dave, there isn't anything fakewagon about my Suburban wink, it puts the Utility in SUV, and the 6.0 can even give it some sport!biggrin It is the grandaddy of SUVs, now most of what they call SUVs these days have very limited Utility.......no

Maybe I am bias as a Suburban owner but they are in a class by themselves imo. As for Suburbans, GM introduced it in 1934, the first station wagons were a Ford and Pontiac in 1937. Who's fake now? Seems like Grand-daddy is the right moniker for the Sub.

When we were young, a 4 door was not something we wanted to be seen in. With classic 2 doors drying up, 4 doors have become a popular option. I wonder if calling them a quad cab etc would be a form of making them more acceptable?

That said, I have never heard them called that....and a real truck does not have 4 doors.

I saw the term for the first time the other day, I 'think' it was for a 66 Beaumont but couldn't find the ad again. Regardless, my first thought was "Oh, an inexperienced poster or they didn't know what to call it?", but now seeing it's become a 'term' I get it. That said, I'm not sure it pisses me off but definitely seems really strange and tongue in cheek like 'more door' etc. as most people are generally looking for the more desirable 2 door versions. But I still think it's weird as 'cab' to me makes sense in the context of a pickup truck, semi tractor, etc. not a car.

From Merriam-Webster Dictionary:

Cab
[short for cabin]
a: the part of a locomotive that houses the engineer and operating controls
b: a comparable shelter (as on a truck) housing operating controls

Just my 2Cents but I turned 50 last year so maybe I'm just getting old too ;)

My kids speak a different language and a different slang than I did, but they're my kids and they know what a crew cab is.

That even sounds funny to me. I was a kid growing up in the mid seventies, crewcab and extended cab is definitely truck talk to me in my opinion. Any time someone says crewcab, extended cab it puts a image of trucks in my head. I could be wrong but I think quad cab is the new word for crewcab these days. I'm a fan of old school crewcabs and extended cab trucks.

I call this one big Harvey. It used to be a Forest Service Initial Attack truck when it was new in 1969.

What a beast.

There has been a trend lately for stupid Australian youngsters to start calling Holden and Ford utility type vehicles 'styleside". Crew Cabs are call dual cabs over here though.

These are examples of Holden and Ford utilities:
