Have any members here seen them?

If they get established they will be devastating to bees (who already have enough problems to deal with). Good NYT article:

When I was a little kid in Ancaster I saw a hornet that by my recollection was that big, inside our house on the window! Probably my imagination though. Mom was really brave, she threw a pot over it, slid paper under it, then I opened the front door and she released it.

Oh, to be single digits in age again...

I've had a career change, after 40 years in the graphics/sign business. I'm now a licensed pest control applicator. I was a a training seminar in Vancouver in March, and had a presentation on these Asian Hornets. I spoke with the fellow who eradicated the nest they found on Vancouver Island last fall, and he had these samples that he preserved, and a piece of the nest.

Bees here have no defense against these hornets. In Japan the bees have learned to "smother" the scout wasp by swarming around it. The heat generated soon kills it.

Im sure therell be some consideration to bring some of those bees over here. I remember seeing a show years ago about the introduction of Cane Toads to Australia to eradicate cane grub. Good intentions but not a good result. Natures balance is pretty amazing.

I used to catch and jar all kinds of Praying Mantis when I was young. Brown and Green ones.

There was a childhood rumour that the Brown ones were the fiercest.confuse

haha. Me too. Did you know they can hiss when provoked? I found out the hard way... The "hiss" comes out of the abdomen"
I had a pair in a jar and woke up one morning to find one missing it's head. Turns out he was a male and she was a female..
