"Thats why it was so disappointing when last year the motor started whining so severely

that the car was nearly undrivable.

To add insult to injury, the local Mercedes-Benz dealership quoted $18,000 to get it fixed by replacing the entire powertrain."

I will stick with my tried and true gas engines. This planet will be here and healthy long after the human race is gone.

If this is the situation in the USA I am certain that there is a business opportunity for a young apprentice about to graduate, he can get his teeth into this segment and start up his own business.  Sounds like an interesting market for repair.

We have a fellow in Oshawa who goes to repair all of the dealership problems that they cant solve in the morning. And in the afternoon has a busy shop diagnosing and installing stereos and what ever else comes in the door as an electrical problem.

Yep. Just like a guy with a gas Mercedes (or any other car) that's out of warranty that needs an engine. Pay the huge price at the dealership for a new one or go to the auto wreckers and get used. There's be a used electric motor for these cars in a yard somewhere.

"Hopefully, it is repairable, and we buy some time to consider what our next EV will be."

I'll never have that problem, but I could use a new laptop...

I agree. There is an opportunity for any technician who can think "outside the box" to take the bull by the horns and learn about this stuff.  As much as many of us would like EVs to go away, they are not going to, and people will need to have work done on them so they can avoid being fleeced by the dealers, who don't have time or expertise (currently - pardon the pun) to dig into the problems (aggravated by flat rate times).

Somebody smart and energetic has a golden opportunity to get in on the ground floor of this stuff.  In time, the dealers will adapt but now is the period to establish yourself as an EV expert.
