S10 T5 transmission mated to 60 Pontiac 261


I have swapped a 261 into my 39 Chevy to replace the original 216.  Initially I intended to use the original Muncie II 3 speed tranny that came with the engine but I have been thinking of using an S10 T5.  Does anyone have experience with such a swap and if so what issues would have to be addressed?  Thanks for any assistance.  Gary Hammond, Lockport, MbIMG_3078.JPG

Gary, i love that sweet 261 in liner of yours.......... what a beauty. I can see from the photo that you have done all the right stuff to update that sturdy work horse. A number of years ago i knew an older gent that did the very same conversion you speak of on his 261 that was in a 1939 Pontiac coupe. He lived in southern Ontario and he was already in his seventies. I have lost track of him or i would pass on the information to you. Good luck with the project and please keep us posted here on C.P. A friend did this years ago on a 65 Chevy pickup. He had to buy a spacer plate as the T5 input shaft was longer. Here is a link to one manufacturer, but there are several if you do a search for t5 spacer plate.

Thanks Paul: I will look into your suggestion. Hopefully the the spline on the T5 will fit through the clutch. Still more research to do.

You will likely have to change clutch or disc to match up with T5 spline. You will love the 5 speed, I had Tremic 5 speed in my 51 Pontiac Torpedo Back with SBC and was great hwy. cruiser, & hauled "a$$" when you "got on it"!!!

There's lots of info out there. I had one ready to put into my truck but my wife wouldn't let me take the truck apart.... I had a machinist buddy lop off about 3/4" off the input shaft, about the same off the front bearing collar, and the bottom two holes had to be opened up to 1/2" This eliminated the need for the adaptor plate. Tranny was out of an early S-10. Clutch was for a 5 speed Astro/Safari van. It all fit great behind a motor I had sitting in a 56 Pontiac frame.

Disclaimer - the amount cut off the shaft and collar are to the best of my memory and are close. I followed these threads. Measurements are in there somewhere....
