Rusty Mustang

I still get shocked seeing what I'd call a late model car being this rusty. Owner must live on gravel roads and near the ocean. Oh, it's available for $1000. I'm told the underneath is so bad it shouldn't be on the road.

BTW-this isn't typical for this style of Mustang

Wow, you can see the spring perch hanging down in front of the rear wheel, and the rear end looks a little cockeyed.

Yikes!  Looks like the trailing arm mount separated from the body.

So, if it's a 2005, then it's a 15 year old car, obviously driven in PEI winters - not unusual for any car in that circumstance to be that rusty.  If it's an '09 (newest it could be), still 11 years old.

Here's a 2007 GM example:

Boy, that is just like the olde-tyme rust that Fords were famous for in the late-60s through early-70s. Those early uni-body Mustangs would rust in strange places, killing all body integrity. It killed many Fairlanes & uni-body Torinos as well, which is a big reason you see Chevelles more often than Torinos.

The beautiful '66 Beaumont SD convertible former Feature Car from Niagara ended up down east. I always worry about how the salt air might be affecting it. I hope the current owner knows how to care for it properly.

From years and years of experience in far-east rust, I can say it's not a problem unless you drive it in the winter and load it with salt.  Then the coastal humidity + the salt will get to it.  Also don't let it sit outside in one spot for too long - especially on grass - this allows moisture/condensation to collect and stay in tight areas, which tends to cause increased crevice corrosion.

Otherwise you're fine.  Think of it this way, the only difference between us and BC is more snow/ice.  They have the coastal humidity and rain all through the winter, but BC cars are always known to be very good for rust condition.

What really kills our cars is that our winter highs/lows always hover around the freezing point, meaning we have a lot of freeze/thaw cycles and thus a lot of salt is applied to our roads - that and the humidity/condensation really speeds up the rusting process (salt is an electrolyte).

I know friends with collector cars who leave them out all summer long - and in fact that's how I do it as well - but we store them inside in the winter.  In fact my 2006 Mustang GT sits outside all summer, and does not have one spot of rust on it - anywhere.

Wade takes good care of that one.

That Mustang may have gone for one of those drives on the beach, splashing through the surf, makes a nice California ad, or PEI too.
