Is this a dumb move?

Needing a full exhaust for my 65 I found this on kijiji in the Ottawa area.

$400 .

Looks decent and pretty close to factory. Manufactured, not cobbled together. Very similar to Gardner system.

Am I way out of line to even consider this? A decent system put together by a popular shop in my town is about $700.

If you think it will fit it looks like a good way to go. Cheaper, already made, and if you want a different sound all you need to do is change the mufflers. If it was available in my city and I was building something like you are, I'd do it in a minute. Especially if you can get the price down.

Remember too that if you wanted to go with something authentic like a Gardner or Waldron system you'd be looking at a lot more USDs.

It looks decent. If you absolutely don't have to have it, wait a few days and maybe make him an offer. It does look like a decent deal if you don't have to buy mufflers right away.

Because the rams horns are included, i would say good deal. $300 would make it even better.

When it comes to negotiating I always want the seller to play the first move on dropping the price. I just ask, what do you need to get out of it? Most will say theyd like to asking price but would take x amount. I try not to be jerk so if the price is reasonable I just pay the seller.

I like the idea, it looks good and you get the manifolds too.

I also have experience with Summit Racing exhaust systems and they have very good products for factory style fitment.  I just looked and saw a whole system for a 65 Biscayne for $499, free shipping to Canada. Just saying since you've got a bit of a logistic problem getting that system from Ottawa to Burlington.

Thanks Ray. I can't find the listing for that Summit system.

Do you have a link to it?

Schafers is supposed to be the best quality going in the x frames, they put them in trailer queens so should be a good fit.

Comparing the 2 pictures there's a BIG difference in the bends from Summit to the set your looking at!!! Used one is "almost straight ????

I am quite sure the Summit pictured exhaust is for an X frame. As soon as I saw the picture I said to myself "our B bodies don't have a pipe that looks anywhere near that". I checked the Summit link and it has a disclaimer that it may not be as pictured.

The Summit photo is "a representation" of the actual system, it is explained on the web page  and shows the pieces you get, clamps and hangers a big bonus in my opinion. Summit also has a top notch "Tech" line where you can speak to a guy who actually knows what's going on and is very helpful. The system that I have experience with was for a 64 GM A Body and it was top quality and exact fit with the correct bends. I was skeptical when the installation was started but it was bang on and looks and sounds great too. I swear by Summit.

Cut a deal and drive up to the Ottawa area and get the one from Kijiji. Do the round trip in a day, sounds like nice way to spend a Saturday or Sunday.

I've done the Toronto to Ottawa and back in a day once when my wife and I were about 40. We had some business at one of the Embassies regarding her Father's overseas property holdings. So the drive plus business and stops for food etc...I left Toronto at 6:30 am and pulled in the driveway at home at just after 8:00 pm. I hammered it down all the way rarely dropping below 159 kph, I know this because the fuel shuts off at 160 in the GMC Suburban, but that burned me out so we took the milk run home along Highway 7. It was actually a very enjoyable journey home once we had the stress and strain of the Embassy out of the way. You have to count on about 9 hours driving.

When I lived in Ottawa in the late 80's I dated a gal in The Beaches area of Toronto.  That was before the 416 was in place, so had the slow drive along highway 16 from Ottawa to the 401.     My comment about sounding like a nice way to spend a Saturday or Sunday was a bit sarcastic.

Well, I'll be 45 minutes north of Peterborough next week, so it looks like a 3 hour drive along 7 to where the pipes are. Not too bad.

Maybe come back up through Calabogie then to Bancroft, Tory hill and Gooderham and down to the cottage. Now that would be a nicer drive. Longer, but really nice.

Leaving at 4am we've made it to Ottawa from Burlington in 4 hours 45 on the 401. Coming back took 5 hours 45 and was a slog.

Yeah we averaged 850 klics a day before we met you guys. Its great as long as you dont ever hit any rush hour traffic which we did after leaving the Falls towards Toronto. Luckily that was a shorter drive. Sounds like your run would be similar for me going into Vancouver and back. Yours is just a little longer.

I bit the bullet and bought the system.

No movement on the price. Is it fair to say I might be able to get at least 50 bucks for the manifolds, bead blasted, painted and re studded?

The seller says the mufflers are marked "GM", which is interesting to say the least. A factory system?

I'll probably use SS band clamps at the cuts.

Any ideas on hangers?

I should explain. One major issue here is the car cannot and won't be be roaded for some time. And in actual fact, I likely wouldn't even start it without an exhaust in place.

In order to get an exhaust done locally, to start, it would have to be flatbedded down to the shop, which would probably be at least 200 bucks in this area. Then it would have to be pushed and prodded into the shop.

If I can get a working exhaust in place, then I can at least start the engine and begin to move the car under it's own power. The more I look at it, the more sense this makes. Even if it takes the better part of a day of driving.
