At first I thought they gave him the Kona. All they are saying is they gave him a good deal.

What's newsworthy is the fact that car went as far as it did without an engine failure.

I remember driving new a brand new Pony and a new 1986 Stellar for work in the 1980s and I thought they were cheap cars well put together. No power back then but they kept going. That is unless you drove a Pony and didn't know about antique things like points & condenser (in the mid 1980s!).

I think Oshawa Cliff has a Hyundai Elantra and he has been known to travel around Southern Ontario making special deliveries. He may be cranking up the mileage on his. I'd like to hear his take on the Elantra.

When I worked in Mississauga there was a customer of ours that ran the COPS ticket-fighting agency (he was an ex-cop). He drove all over southern Ontario for work in his Hyundai and had 400,000k in only a few years. The only thing that made the car look used was all the paint sandblasted from the front of the car from highway debris. That, and the headlights went all milky.

No different than a taxi. There are many Toyotas with more than a million km around. I remember back when full size cars were cabs that six hundred thousand miles on the original engine wasnt uncommon. A buddy had cabs on a local taxi service in the eighties and his cars of choice were Chevy Impalas. With two drivers on a car more than a thousand miles a week was normal. I expect in a large city like Toronto the mileage would be higher.

Hyundai has improved leaps and bounds over the Pony that was originally exported to Canada (not the US) starting in 1983.  To compare the new ones to a Pony is like comparing a current Chevrolet to a Vega.

Doesn't surprise me that it hit a million km with good care and maintenance.  Though they have had engine issues on some their more recent models, which tells me that they still have a way to go, at least in their testing and evaluation during development.  That current issue should have been caught before production.

On the taxi side, there's a local taxi driver who has a 2013 Honda Accord that had 900,000 km on it as of last spring.  The guy is meticulous about cleaning and maintenance, and I'm sure it won't be long till it hits a million.  The car looks like new when you see it, he's taken such good care of it.
