Got the exhaust system home after a very nice drive along 7 to Carlton place, and back home to the Kawartha's, north through Arnprior, Renfrew and Bancroft. Beautiful scenery, some eastern towns not yet seen, and the roads were actually pretty quiet. System is in very good shape so it seems to have been worth it.
Plan on pulling the pipes off the mufflers and welding the cuts on the long pipes. New donuts and a gasket at the gutted riser core (Thanks Carl!).
Maybe spruce it all up with some paint?
Questions:
This must be a side exit system I assume? I might modify it for a rear exit.
What is the best way to pull apart clamp crimped flanges?
And what type of hangers would you use to mount it all up?
Any and all mounting tips to consider are appreciated..
Unless you are concerned about originality, I would agree with your suggestion of running the pipes out the back. This would give your car a more aggressive look. There is nothing sweeter than a pair of pipes out the back where they can be seen and heard. Just my two cents worth. Do as you please; it is your ride.
I'd also go with side exhaust for this car. Do you know what this setup was originally for?
The system is from a parted out 67 Impala fastback with a 327 275. I think it was a card bent system. The mufflers are IMCO (international muffler company), GM 10 stamped on them.
As far as originality goes, I believe any dual exhaust small block sedan or HT B in 65 would have had small pipes all the way back. 409 I don't know. BB 66 they had sides.
To start, I think I'll just go with the side exits as is, as long as they sit nice and are not wonky looking.

When I converted my 2+2 hdtp to dual exhaust shortly after buying it, the fellow at the muffler shop showed me how the chassis was already drilled for the hangers for dual exhaust. It makes sense as it's not like they had different frames for single and dual.
Take a peek at the crossmember just ahead of the differential to see how it's drilled for the hangers. Not sure if your 65 and the donor 67 used the same hangers. As you have a 67 to compare it to, take a look to see if they're the same.
