I have been using Dextron automatic transmission oil in my 1957 power steering system in both my present 1957 Pontiac and my previous 1957 Chevrolet. These systems in the 1950's were designed to leak and leak they do from the control valve and assist ram cylinder. In 1957 Dextron was not invented yet and the fluid that GM said to use was GM Type A fluid for the Power Glide automatic and power steering systems. Is there any oil out there that is better all around than the GM Dextron oil. I rebuilt my whole 1957 power steering system in 1997 and it looks like the control valve is now due for another rebuild. The assist cylinder is fine but the oil just pours out of the control valve. I have just picked up a rebuild kit for the valve but i was wondering if anyone has had better luck with a different type of oil in their older power steering set ups. Any advise would be very appreciated. Cheers.

Transend oil sold at Wajax dealers. Very expensive but highly recommended by mechanics that worked at harper detroit diesel. We use that oil in the 700r4 conversions and in transmission that i know guys do a lot of heavy towing. If it works in Allision transmissions in large trucks it has to be good.

This is what this silly beast looks like. Prehistoric power steering technology but it got us out of the cave ladies and gentlemen. Took it apart and rebuilt it again since 1997. Hoping for the best.
