1st Run In The '70 Estate Since Top End And Transmission Rebuild/Replacement

Since there are a few posts on the go regarding 1st outs since repairs, I will add... It's been 4 years since my trip east in the Estate, I have to finish that thread, and before I left, the old LS4 was down on compression on 3 cylinders. Also, before I left the Rock, the 700R4 was starting to flare in 3rd gear, 3-4 clutches were getting weak. So I removed the heads, original steel head gaskets, I had 2 exh valves replaced as they were too out of round to true up and 1 valve was ok with a grind. With covid, I built myself some homemade tools and decided to rebuild a core 700 I had here from a '91 pickup.

I haven't touched a 700 in 15 years, I was a GM tech for nearly 20 years, so I brushed up a little, disassembled a donor transmission for practice and then did the one out of the pickup and R&R'ed the existing one in the Estate. Decided to wash up the car and to take a drive to Ken's (Cheviac) to see how it worked but ended up going on and extra 100kms or so to Rosetown, Sk to visit a few friends there..

At 70mph, the LS4 spins @1500rpm and @16 at 75-80 on the divided. Direct route there, 220mi and 41.7L. With a little city driving and a visit to Ken's, 239mi and 51.5L on the return trip after picking up a pal of mine to hitch a ride to return a pickup back to Saskatoon and with a fair S/E wind on the nose of the car. (24mpg and 22.5mpg--459mi total, 23.3mpg) Very well behaved.

I LIKE IT !!! Very very nice. I am thinking maybe a C.P. feature car article. That big block just makes it even more interesting. How about it. Cheers.

Good to see it back on the road again and even running better than before. That was an enjoyable trip to follow you on. Those are impressive numbers. Nice to be able to be that economical and still have access to that kind of power.

Thanks fellahs... I am just a on the down low key kinda guy that likes to fly just under the radar..

Another nice day here today. Ken, (Cheviac) informed me that he was planning a trip here with his new to him purchase for it's maiden run from the outskirts of Saskatoon, about 250kms. Since I hadn't had my Rag out but for quick drive around town, I decided to take her into the shop last night to have a quick look over. Oil change, tighten one bolt and replace the other to the shifter handle to the shifter body itself, a washup in the morning and I planned to meet at Dafoe, 74kms from me, about 180kms away for Ken to hook up and drive back to my place. Thought I was going to be late but we arrived there and pulled into the gas station at the same time. Perfect timing!

As do I. This was a 327-glide car. Converted the car just after it was acquired possibly in '83 or so. So yes, it too is fake as many of them are on here but it was missing everything when my Dad bought it! (haha) The car was given to me in '82, I was 15. John, gparis7, can contest to seeing it in it's beginnings way back then.  I did buy an original rebuilt and rechromed shifter about 10 years ago but the 8-ball was drilled and tapped by my Uncle who always told me that as a kid, I always brought him the most peculiar things to work on... as a kid, we didn't have the tools as my Dad wasn't inclined as such. Some things will stay that way because of the history and memories forged in that regard. The console is from a '66 Caprice and I still have the gauge package from it.

I converted this one to 5.7L 350ci TBI EFI in '95 when it was finally painted and roadworthy.
