Wanted- Reg Cab 4x4 truck with 8 foot box.

I'm looking for a solid, good working regular cab 4x4 pickup with an 8 foot box. Age not important as long as it's solid and decent mechanically. Not too concerned about the condition of the paint etc but would really like to not have to replace cab mounts/corners etc.  My budget isn't huge: about 4 grand or less (esp if I need to factor in a couple of grand for shipping). I'd also consider something like a Tracker/Sidekick (or something similar) in good shape that I could mount a front receiver to for my small plow and then get a 2wd pickup in the spring. As for the truck a GM or Dodge (no 4.7's)  or pre-95 Ford would be nice.  I will consider extended cab trucks if the price is right. I don't need anything fancy- in fact the plainer the better works for me. Manual 4wd would be nice instead of the problematic automatic 4wd systems.

Thanks!

 Todd

Nobody has any leads or trucks sitting in their yard they aren't using?

Hi Todd those lovely simple straightforward trucks seem to be surprisingly hard to find.  I was in the market myself and I couldn't find a  functional low mileage pickup  like that. The old ones all seemed to have been messed with too much over the years and the newer ones are all full of the fancy stuff you see on all trucks these days and/or were extended/crew cabs.

I finally had to buy a 1995 Chevy short box 4x4 auto with about 260,000kms. It is a fairly high end truck with all the bells and whistles of the time but at least is a regular cab. It works well except when I have a serious load to haul or on long trips when the buckboard ride quality starts to get to me.

i also picked recently up a slightly decrepit 1990 Silverado long box regular cab 4x4 that I'm using just as a yard truck. That is more what you want I think but i wouldn't try driving it to where you live! That would be an adventure!

They have to be out here somewhere!

I agree Ken. These bare bones trucks are getting harder to find. Your 90 Silverado is the type of truck I'd like to get.

this one in calgary might be worth investigating - seems to have most of the specs you are looking for

That looks very good! Good price!

3/4 ton (I like) with AC (I don't like).

When I was looking for a truck last year to carry some parts home from AB & Sask, I bought an old bare bones 2007 GMC service truck, single cab, long box, 4.8 V8, 2wd, 200K kms with high factory built box. I drove it from Alberta to Newfoundland with no issues, and since it was rust free and secure for a trades worker and tools, I was able to sell it as soon as I got home.

When I was looking for candidates 3-4 weeks ahead of my trip, I did identify a number of good, reasonably priced trucks Dodge, Ford, GM and Toyota such as Todd is looking for, but many of them were sold by the time I actually got to Sask and AB. If that experience is an indication, good bare  (or barer) bones trucks are still out there.

You should watch the auction site govdeals. I find that municipalities are still big users of standard cab trucks.

Heading out to look at this:

94 1 ton reg cab 4x4 with a 350/auto. 125000 kms. Had a replacement box thanks to a tree falling on the old one. Seller pretty much rebuilt the steering and brakes. Plow has new motor.

Well I bought the above truck. Quite solid for an island truck. Runs/drives good. The plow is a little heavier than what I'll need. I may run it this winter though. It's pretty much exactly what I was looking for.

Congrats Todd!  Looks like just the ticket!

Next decision:  Paint the cab silver or the bed red?  wink

One nice thing from the pics is that the bed gap looks even all the way up.  I've seen quite a few of that generation around here that looks like the frame sagged a little bit when they are used hard.  The fact that yours doesn't have this is a good sign.

That sag can also be rotted cab or bed mounts.

I'll run it as is for now and next year would like to pull the box and paint the cab to match it. I was quite happy with the condition of the undercarriage. These 1 tons have quite a substantial frame.

Oh sure they can, especially around here.  Rust does all kinds of weird and wonderful things to vehicles, especially on the east coast.

I'm not a truck guy, but was told by somebody familiar with them that the frame sag was a common malady with this gen of Chev.  If I'm wrong I stand corrected.

Regardless, Todd's truck look great!

Good stuff, Todd.  It's fine as is... it's a truck!  Matching paint is optional!  smile

Slight snag with the truck. My insurance company won't cover it because it's a 3500 (1 ton)!

My broker says I have to list it with a company who deals with "Commercial vehicles". What a crock. Anyway my broker only deals with one such insurance company and is getting me a quote....
