Oil change interval times

We all know to change our oil at 5,000 km on the in side of the engine. How long should it be for the outside? This is a 327 from Las Vegas, it looks like it never got changed

Ah yes the old protective coating of grime! See lots like this but usually once you get that off they are pretty good underneath, assuming the inside oil ever did get changed.

I think on some of those you didnt have to change the inner oil very often, just keep adding. It never got too dirty that way.

Years ago my " late" friend that owner a local wreckers, pulled a 283 out of a 66 Nova S/S that looked like that!! Before "yanking" it, we hooked up a 5 gal. jug of gas and tried firing it up after years of sitting!! It "lit" right up, no noise, no lifter clatter, & ran like a dream!! Jimmy said" well you can't tell a book by it's cover still is true"!!!!!

I have seen many Chevy 283 and 327s that looked like that. I was an apprentice in the 70s and had customers that would come in for an oil change but would never pay for replacing the valve cover gaskets. Many still ran very well and I replaced a camshaft in a 68 Pontiac with a 327 that was dirty on the outside but was clean on the inside. Some of the Chevies had came problems in 1967 and 68. My boss at the time worked at a dealership and remembers doing quite a few camshafts under the 50,000 mile drivetrain warranty.

Kevin, what year is that engine? I always thought 66 327's had the 65 style valve covers but I'm second guessing that now. I thought 327 went to the standard valve cover in 67 but did that maybe happen in 66?
