Zinc additive

5C7681B1-779C-4F0D-B8CF-D32FD072655E.jpeg

As we all know, there isnt any zinc anti-wear additive in automotive engine oil any more. I changed the oil in my riding mower and picked up the oil and filter from the dealer around the corner from me. Well, the small engine motor oil still has the zinc additives. If you are concerned about zinc you could probably just add a litre when charging the oil.

And also, as far as I know the GM EOS still has the zinc as well.

That's correct. Bought several cases a few years ago account a rumor that EOS was being discontinued. Not true.

Been using EOS since fall 1964 when I started at York Mills Pontiac in Toronto.

Great information to know because all our flat tappet motors need it badly. I made the mistake of not using it as regularly as I should and it cost me big time. I munched a camshaft in my 57 Pontiac's 261. I got a bunch of flat lobes and i could not keep proper valve timing. I made myself a ton of work and the cost of all the required parts to do the repair. Now I am very religious in putting Zinc in both my oldies because I hate the work involved in replacing a cam and lifters.

Have used Castrol (various viscosities) and EOS in everything since the late 60's. Including some serious race cars.

Never any oil issues. The mechanics at Gorries in the 60's said EOS is all you need to supplement your oil.

That has proven prophetic.

That looks like it must be a US number maybe? And it won't have the zinc. You want 992869 from a Canadian dealer.

Those C.P. members out there that are using Zinc in their oldies. I have to ask what kind of money you are paying for the Zinc products that you are using. I find the stuff so expensive but of course you have to be dollar wise and penny foolish and not the other way around. I use the stuff in my 57 261 six and my 74 400 V-8, so that is every year with an oil change times two. I know that does not seem like much but i was hoping I could get some better deals. Right now I am paying $20.00 per application per car. Any input would be appreciated. Cheers.

EOS is a lot cheaper than that George. As Carl mentioned "You want 992869 from a Canadian dealer"

You absolutely do not need any of the expensive stuff being sold elsewhere today. I've been using this stuff

since the early 60's and never an oil issue.

The old cars get one oil change a year (before storage and one can EOS each)

Cannot be used with catalytic converter cars.

George, I removed the comment about not using with catalytic converters.

It does not state that on the EOS and I may have mistaken that for a gasoline additive.

Sorry for the confusion.
