Valid question. Mark IV 454's are externally balanced, and have a large counterweight on the backside of the flywheel. I believe small block 400's are also externally balanced, but not sure.
However, I'm not certain re the later 454's whether they're external or internally balanced.
The simple answer is yes all 454 both Gen V and VI are externally balance however the flywheel spec changes for the variations and year made as to the counter weights.
I bought mine at Summit and I recommend Summit for this, they offer great performance products under their own name at excellent cost. I went to Summit and got the following tutorial or article on the 454 flywheels, easy to read and very informative:
It'll fit, but 454's are externally balanced and have a large counterweight on the backside. Small block flywheels don't have the counterweight, with the possible exception of small block 400's. Without the counterweight the engine balance is thrown way off.
396-402-427 were internally balanced and the externally balanced 454 flywheels wont work on those early blocks, I have a 427 flywheel on my 409. 400 small block and 454 were externally balanced so basically they were the first GM externally balanced flywheels starting in 1970. 168 tooth small block flywheels will work on 396-402-427.
Just to clarify for future readers of this post.
