Using UPS to ship parts to Canada

I know many of you are reading the subject line and yelling "NO, don't do that, ever!"  I have been one of those guys yelling no for years too. I have a story (as usual.....)

I wanted a specific cam for the 427 I plan to build this winter. It was tough to find the exact one I want but happily the company I've used for decades for a lot of engine parts, Northern Auto Parts in Sioux City Iowa showed that they normally stock it. I found it listed on their online ebay store (better price that way than if I called direct) and bought the last one. I called them and said I had bought it on ebay and wanted it shipped USPS (mail) but somehow our communication got messed up and when I checked my confirmation email it said UPS. I panicked because I know enough guys who've been burned by UPS importing parts. Contacted Northern, told them the mistake and wanted to cancel the UPS, send it USPS rather. However, it was too late so I told them not to worry, it was my mistake and I'd just have to suck it up. So here I sat, waiting for the UPS guy to show up at my door and make me angry when he demanded some ridiculous sum of money for brokerage.

Today when I was at work, my wife calls and says the UPS guy is here and he needs to be paid. With a sigh, I said "How much is it?" I almost fell over when she said "$30.95". I was expecting it to be triple that. This is VERY fair

That's pretty good Carl but what rankles me is that not only to they charge a lot, they cant even find my place or let me know that they cant find my place. (given that I don't have a street address.)  I always end up angrily tracking it down three weeks after I figure it should have showed up and still have to pay the the schmucks for their incompetence.

I know. Look at just the brokerage fees. Peanuts.

These days, they pretty much have a blank slate to write in whatever amount they want knowing they have us bent over the proverbial barrel because we can't cross the border. I'm still in amazement.

They sometimes do a follow up invoice later Carl. But maybe they have changed due to fedex and post office competition? Amazon has really driven down shipping costs and I think made eBay work on all aspects of shipping costs? Hopefully ups has really changed.

I thought about maybe an invoice later but I don't see how they could?confuse This one has taxes and brokerage fees on it already.

But I guess it's not impossible.

Carl, I have also stayed away from UPS for shipment from the US.   But because of some USPS extended shipping time-lines, I decided to use them twice over the last 3 months....and I can echo that I was shocked that their rates were reasonable.  Actually one of the shipments came through with no HST as well, so not costs just like Canada Post does for smaller packages...I was really shocked by that.

So I think UPS has recently changed their billing strategy recently.

In addition to that they have a quick delivery time.

And if your spouse wasn't home, they would have left a note for you to come pick it up at their depot as UPS has to get paid at the door for some reason, or they take the package with them so you can pay later.

I am not sure where the Morris depot is but in Wpg, you have to go down to Polo Park, and their depot is only open from 8 am till 5, M - F. For me, thats halfway across the city and just way too much hassle.

What I dont understand is that I dont have to go through any of this with other carriers like Fedex, or Canpar, or USPS. It seems what ever is charged at the vendor point of sale never triggers extra brockerage fees at the door with Fedex or any other carrier.

Not sure but I do know that the Purolator depot is on Main Street in Morris because I had a card stuck to the door last week.

our mail lady never brings our packages to the door just leaves a card in the box for us to pick up at the post office 11 km one way. Couple of years ago she was off on stress leave but managed to come back the week before Christmas to collect all her Christmas money cards from everyonehmm

Our Post Mistress in town is absolutely amazing. Because of my wife's physical limitations, she is unable to carry virtually any package bigger than what would fit in our little box there. When my wife goes to the counter to get the parcel, the lady carries it out to the car for her and always with a big smile while she does it. Needless to say, this lady gets a Tim's card or her favourite hot drink from Tim's delivered to her counter from time to time!

Apparently the UPS driver who dropped off this parcel that started this topic was a wonderful young man who brought the parcel right inside and waited patiently for my wife to write him a cheque. It's refreshing to have a great start to finish experience importing car parts!

Why would anyone leave her money for X-mas. It is a job after all and apparently not getting done.

When I ordered parts from USA through UPS in the past, I was told by a buddy at work to call UPS right away and let them know that I would take care of brokerage fees myself ie pick up the paperwork on route 90 and Dublin UPS depot and take it to Custom on Wellington by the Winnipeg airport, I sure save a ton of money, even sometimes the person at custom let me go without paying any duties :) ... After that I take the papers back to UPS and pick up my part(s). Helps that I work in Winnipeg, for people out of town it is more of a pain ...

When we had a retail business years ago we brokered our own imports. I had forgotten all about that! Some of the orders we brought in were complicated and we managed to get it done. Car parts are easy!

In the past I have never had one good experience with UPS.......... NEVER. To be fair though, I have not used them in over five years and hopefully they have changed their tune. In the past they were always the worst. I prefer to have my stuff shipped by the U.S Postal Service (ground). It is obvious to see where there might be confusion between the two. UPS verses USPS.
