Said goodbye to one of our dogs today.

Our little Millie is no longer suffering. 10 years old, she had suffered from growing tumors in her belly for the last 7 months, and the last week was really bad. So it was time. She'd packed in a lot of life, joy and travel in those 10. So no regrets.

We'd never done this before, but we had people come to the house to put her to sleep. I can't say enough about doing it this way. It is so much more comfortable for the dog. She never liked the vets anyway. What dog does? And the truth is, it was only a couple hundred more. Well worth it.

So sorry to hear about this Mark.

To come home from a stressful day and find a waging tail is the best thing possible for our health.

They don't care about our day.

"you are home !" is all they care about.

I'm sorry to hear that Mark. Dogs are so special. We're talking about getting one that size as a house dog (never had indoor dogs on the farm) and I find I'm such a sucker for little ones like you have.

Hopefully lots of smiles when you remember the fun times.

Wow Mark. So sorry for the loss of Millie. You treated her right by having the vet at home.

I sat down to bring CP up to date on my health issues. Will do it in another post..

Always a sad time. I had to put my Doberman down about 15 years ago when he was near 11, sad day and I still get sad thinking about it. Had it done at our house too, but he loved the Vets. Whenever we walked past the Vets he'd push the door open and go and sit on the scales. My pet White Cockatoo died at 36 years old two years ago, that was sad too. She died at the Vets after a prolapse after laying an egg, I was very sad that I wasn't there when she died, I had hand raised her when I was a kid in school.

I will tell her. She will remember it like it was yesterday.

I got a sad one for you

The last dog we had I had to get her put down on Christmas Day. Kids were home from university and in the afternoon I took the family to show them this cool house we were building with a large deck and a beautiful view. House was just at framing stage and when the kids went out on the deck the dog scooted after them but there was a little ice and right over the edge he went. 30+ feet down onto the rock face. Little 12 pounder Bichon cross broke a couple legs and was really breathing with some difficulty so into the vets. Prognosis was so so but he was 10 so I told the kids this day will come sometime anyhow so they each held the dog and said good bye. If you want a quiet Christmas dinner just put your family through that. I wasnt going to pay 5+ grand to see if he would make it and how hed feel later in life. Was the best dog Ive ever had but we havent got another to replace him and probably wont until we get abit older and stay home most of the time. Greatest companions ever.

Mark, I know exactly what you are going through. We had to put one of our puppies down-sisters- last Jan and YES it was the hardest thing I've ever had to do. I've watched my best friend and father pass away and putting our little Caliegh down broke my heart. My eyes still water up when ever I think about her- like now!!! She was with us for 10 years as well. We still have her sister who brings us joy everyday.........

Thanks for all the kind comments.

This little one was harder than any from my past. Must be getting sentimental in my old age?

Some people say they'd never own a dog for that reason. I still say it's worth a few weeks of heartache if they can give you 10 years of joy. They give you that much.

Yeah, I don't get that thinking at all Mark. That would be like me saying that I wish I'd never had my brother who was so special to me cause it hurts too much now that he's gone. Flawed thinking!

Sorry for the loss of your furry pal.
not to derail the topic, but many of us have other furry pals such as cats. we recently loss our cat of 21 years. (100% house cat)
she was my morning 4:30 wake up call. (FeedMe). She would often accompany me out to the garage,(i never had a rodent problem out there.)

Our furry pals do bring warmth to our hearts.

 Sorry to hear about Millie.

Sounds like a better solution than going to the vet (which I've had to do a few times). It wasn't great for the cat(s) or us.

Sorry for your loss Mark, we went through that a couple of years ago. Managed to go for six months of a quite house with no greeting of unconditional love when we came home every day. Got a little Havanese, 10 pounds of joy again we are very lucky to have. She is extremely spoiled now.CB845ECC-0DC6-4D97-B2B0-92C948BF93D3.png

That's a tough one Mark! Sorry for your loss..... We had to put our best friend down about a 1 1/2 months ago. Still expect her at the front door when I get home and still put my plate up so she doesn't steal anything! It will take a while to adjust....  Our dog Cassie.  She sat........I stood confuse

Thanks so much for your thoughts guys. It meant a lot to us.

We lasted all of 4 days. Just went and picked out another little one today West of St Jacobs in Mennonite country. We get her in 4 weeks!

A note to anyone looking for a more popular breed today. Be prepared for some serious sticker shock! Ouch! Oh well...
