Big block crankshaft rotator

I think the new buzz word is "repurposing" something?

It's always a pain rotating the crank on a complete engine when it's on the stand. Usually I put 3 bolts into the balancer and stick a bar in there but the other day I was looking at those sockets they make for this. Suddenly the light came on. The 454 I got has a balancer on it and I'd noticed the rubber on it was going bad, I wouldn't trust using it on a good engine.

I pressed the outer ring off the hub. Found the inner race from an old Timken bearing that just fit nicely in the recess on the balancer hub. First I reamed out the inside bore of the hub with a stone on the die grinder and then smoothed it out with a flapper wheel to the point it just slides nicely on and off the snout of a big block crank without using any tools.  Welded a heavy washer to the race, welded a nut to the washer and then welded the race to the hub. Now when I need to rotate a big block I can just slip it on the crank, put a socket on the nut and Bob's your uncle. And it was free except for a little bit of welding wire.

Shoot, I guess I can't copy and paste them. I'll have to do it a different way.

Yes pictures work now. I had a crank hub of a cavalier that my buddy welded a nut onto i, much like your set up
Have used it for many crankshafts, well to rotate anyway. Amazing on how many cranks it fits. using it on Toyota's, LOL.

Not sure what all this one will fit but I knew what crank my first rotator had to fit!
