Looks like original engine, which makes me think it's actually a Pontiac 301, not a 400. Big difference.

Good point, I never caught that. If it's an 80 it couldn't have been built with a 400.

A test drive would tell the story!

It says T/A 6.6 which actually is a Pontiac 400- if original. 301's and 400's look identical. Olds 403's( 6'6 Litre) are a different story. Slugs.

But there is no 400 Pontiac in 80, 79 was the end of the era.

Is it possible its a 1979? Does the hood decal offer any clues?

To me I see 4 feathers at the leading edge of the hood both sides in 1979, same as car for sale.

The 1980 has only 3 feathers each side.

I don't know that you could trust the hood bird, Ray.  The paint on the door latch and screws tells me that this car has been painted at least once.

The paint on the door latch isnt a good indicator. It was brought up on another forum quite a long time ago when a low mileage original GM car had painted door latches and striker pins. One of the forum members found assembly line pictures from the paint line and it clearly showed the bare body with the doors and latches installed (doors were open) when being painted. Also members showed pictures of cars under restoration and there wasnt any paint under the door hinges or door strikers indicating that they were installed before the body was painted.

A little more on paint, My Dad bought a brand new Grand LeMans in 1976 from Hogan Pontiac Buick in Toronto, when I was assigned to wash it for the first time I found overspray on the rocker mouldings, this on a car we had for only a few days, factory fresh.

I'd agree that the car looks so nice it screams repaint but then its only got 18,000 km on it and I really wonder why the engine would have been swapped and all the decals changed in that short period if it is a 1980. Just a possible explanation for the 400 engine, we've seen sellers incorrectly identify the model year many times before.

I got a reply back from the seller :

"It did have a 301. It was upgraded to the 400 by the previous owner."

That seems to solve the mystery.

Kind of misleading advertisement then imo. Very easy to say it was upgraded, its a good selling feature especially seeing it done so well. Afterall anyone going to shell out over $30,000 grand to get this on the road is going to be a knowledgeable car person.

Thanks for the info on the door latches being installed before paint line at the factory.  I can honestly say I've never noticed it before.

I can't say it impresses my sense of what good fit and finish should be, but then I guess it was a sign of the times at GM.
