Hi Frank and welcome to Canadian Poncho.

Yes, disc brakes were an option on a 68 SD 396. What are you plans for the car? If it's all original you may want to leave it that way in the interest of keeping the value up as a "correct" car. However, many companies sell a nice disc brake conversion for that car. It would have had a 4 piston caliper disc brake setup on it from the factory if it was ordered with disc and the conversion kits will be a single piston caliper.

If you plan on driving the car regularly I would convert it to disc brakes. Keep all the original parts if at some point someone wants to keep it original. I am a retired mechanic and on more than one occasion I have been asked to road test an older restored car. While driving the question comes up what do you think of the brakes, the car doesnt stop very well. The last one was a 1969 Dodge Polara with drum brakes, my response was welcome to 1969.
You cant expect your SD to stop like a modern car but disc brakes are a major improvement.

Oh boy, I'd leave it yellow, they look great in Butternut with black stripes.

Honestly, you don't want them! They are expensive because the purists drive the prices up, and they really are troublesome (leaking). Go with the single piston style that 69-72 used, cheaper and better.
