Had an offer on my car...but not really 4 sale?

So am contemplating selling the Canso (don't have to sell) Had a guy offer good $$$ for the car...but not what I would take. I'm sure he'll offer more...just not 100 % I want to sell. When does the dollar take over the enjoyment? Only reason I'm thinking of it is that the 57 never moved this year. Torn between keeping...selling. Luv building cars..just don't know if I will ever find another 2nd gen Canso to build.......  What to do......

Picture it gone. Keep that thought for a week or two. See how you like the idea. If you think you'd build another one, then sell it if the offer is high enough. There's still project cars out there but the prices have certainly gone up on them.

My gut feeling is you don't really want to sell it!

I'm thinking if you're asking about it you don't really want to sell it, but only you will know for sure.

Questions I would ask myself if I were you:

- Is the thrill of the hobby just the build for you?  That is, are you bored with the car and want to free up funds for another build because that's what you enjoy the most?

- Is this a model that you've always wanted?  You say you would want to find another one to build, so I'm asking myself why not just keep the one you have - the one that you know inside and out and have invested all that time and money into?

- Have you figured out how much you have into the car (including your time)?  Does the offer even come close to matching your investment?

- Will you miss the car once it's gone?  Once you let it go you will probably never get it back - then you don't know how the next guy will do to it, or the next, etc.  How much does the car mean to you?

- How much do you enjoy driving the car?  Is there anything else you would like to do with it to make it better (i.e. maybe keep the car and start a new project making those improvements)?

It's a tough decision to make, but really comes down to what you want and knowing how you will react after the fact.

All I've learned over the years is that these old cars can be really hard to replace, but I also understand getting bored and wanting to move on.  There are some cars I've sold that I was happy to have had the experience with them but I'm glad I sold them, whereas others I regret selling to this day.  In the case of regrets, with the way prices have gone I could never afford to buy another, in as good of shape as those were, to replace those particular cars - not to mention I never see them for sale anymore.

If it were me I'd hold off and put it out of my mind for a couple of weeks or even months - sometimes the answer just comes to you when you're not thinking about it.  If you put pressure on yourself to make a quick decision there's a good chance you will regret it.  Your car is beautiful, so even if this offer dries up I don't think you would have trouble selling it sometime down the road.

Lots to think about here for sure, and I wish you the best of luck with your decision!

I didn't think I would ever sell my '66 Canso SD but I am getting older and the right price came along. It's hard to not accept!

If the price was really right, and if was the right person, I'd sell and move onto another project. Maybe one that you've always thought that you'd like to do some day.

Life is short, and if it's really the parts chase and build you love, do it now. They'll come a day where you can't physically do it anymore.

That's a hard one. I have wrestled and still wrestle with the thoughts of selling. The black 65, never, but the others?
You can only drive 1 at a time, and keeping multiple in driving shape can be time consuming and costly, but the enjoyment is still there.
Is the build for the build or the drive after? There is no wrong answer to your question, but it seems to me if you are hesitant, then maybe now isn't the time.

If it still brings you pleasure and you are proud of it in your driveway, I wouldn't part with it. I'd try another approach to building. Find partners to help fund or build a car for someone else and let them finance your hobby.
They make that dirty old money everyday. They'll never make your car again.
some good advice in the posts above for consideration.

Always a tough one. One question I have. Down the road will you ever get access to that gorgeous Acadian that I think your in-laws have? There probably isnt a right answer as we are all different as are our cars. These Canadian cars are unique though, its not like replacing a 66 Mustang, theres probably only 100 million of them left out there. Good luck with the choice.

Jim,

I would sell it.....only if the price is right.....but don't sell yourself short.

Do your homework on the value of the car out there and where the value is going.

You don't want to kick yourself for selling it only to find out this car was money in the bank, or could have been an investment for your future pension.

I'm sure your interested party knows what it's worth and I hope that the offer for your car is over  $54,400 U.S.

-George

Info on the value on line:

https://www.hagerty.com/media/car-profiles/1962-67-chevy-ii-nova-values-slow-burn/#:~:text=The%201966%20Nova%20SS%20with,examples%20are%20valued%20at%20%24126%2C000.

"The second-gen 1966-67 Nova received a more substantial redesign-

including a new grille and fastback roofline-and once again,

the Super Sport led the way.

It could be had with the new 327-cubic-inch, 350-hp Turbo-Fire V-8.

The 1966 Nova SS with 327/350 L79 engine is by far the most valuable,

with an average price of $54,400 in #3 (Good) condition.

Concours-condition examples are valued at $126,000."

"That's great news for Nova owners who have been wondering when their vehicles might get some love from the rest of the (buying) automotive world. Newton cautions, however, that although median prices are heading north, it's too early to reach any conclusions. "Other indicators of future collectibility, like insurance quote frequency, are lagging behind the rest of the market," he says, "and while auction and private sales prices are strong, they aren't crazy."

The slow pace of the practically-under-the-radar rise might actually be a blessing when it comes to buying a Nova. "They're affordable classic muscle, and most of our data shows them staying in the affordable camp," Newton says. "If you want the look and performance of a classic muscle car in a compact but relatively cheap package, the Nova has always been a top choice."

A little different situation, but a week ago I was parked in Port Perry with the Impala and had I guy waiting for me to come back. Said car was beautiful and was it for sale, I said "maybe" but it's expensive!! Told him it was appraised for $54,600 [ 409 /4 speed S/S] but price would be somewhat less, then he dropped it, asked if $34,ooo would buy it, answer NO!! conversation ended!!

All good points to ponder. I'm in no rush and have a $$$ figure in my head if I was to let her go.

Thanks , think I will let him know to give me a bit and that the car isn't going anywhere

Its only a car. Get rid of it. Take the money build something else. Sounds like you get more enjoyment building then driving. Plus you say you havent driven your other one.
