these jeep vehicles were rarely seen even when new

at least around winnipeg

I think this version has a lot more fibreglass and plastic on it compared to when it first came from the factory - the front fascia, the bumpers, probably some other parts

I didn't think there was enough of a restoration market to support someone making custom parts like that, plus the decals-

Anyway these vehicles must have a following

I recall reading a few year ago that a business in texas was buying up low mileage grand wagoneers and restoring them to new condition

Very cool. Drop in a crate Redeye motor, update the suspension and then you have a really cool retro Jeep. My 2 cents.........

Those pickups had that same look.

I think that grille has been swapped. A buddy had a 1974 Jeep Cherokee and the sheet metal behind the stamped aluminum grille looked like this truck. I wouldnt be surprised if the early grille and lighting would fit without much work.

Isnt that a stock front end/grill from about 65-67? I recall seeing a few over the years - a rare beast for sure.

Potentially a grille swap, it's a mismatch of eras. Golden Eagle was a package around 1977-78 (going off memory), offered on CJ-5, CJ-7 and the Wagoneer/Cherokee.

The end-of-era Grand Wagoneers are going the same direction on price as first gen Ford Broncos - restorations and resto-mods are going for stupid money.

Thx Bob for the background- I couldnt figure out why everyone thought it was a grill swap when it looked stock to me - which I guess it is, just not the right era.
They did a nice job of it.  I like it.

1977 to 1983, to correct myself. My buddy in high school had a 1978 CJ5 G.E., 304 with 3 spd manual floor shift. It was a really nice vehicle.

Here's a 1979 Cherokee, more how it "should" look

Here's  a 66 last year for that stand up grille. As said the sheet metal remained under the revised grille for the duration of production so the swap was relatively easy and looks so much better in my opinion.

This is the Gladiator pickup, think they had this grill until about 1970. Like the look of these, even the later ones.

I was wondering what is the deal with those bumpers - they look aftermarket, as I believe the Grand Wagoneers had chrome bumpers right up until the end in 1991.

I might be wrong on this, but my memory is of these vehicles pretty much being responsible for today's popularity of the SUV.  When Jeep started outfitting Grand Wagoneers like luxury cars they became quite a hit with influential people who wanted luxury but wanted to project an "outdoorsy" vibe.  You started seeing Hollywood types with them, and the other makers saw that and started bringing out their own versions of (truck-based) luxury SUVs, eventually evolving to where SUVs are now becoming the mainstream vehicle with many manufacturers eliminating sedans from their lines.  That's how I recall it anyhow - I remember being surprised that so many people who probably never would have driven a truck before, suddenly buying big SUVs because they were the 'in' thing.

Here's a page from a 1989 Jeep brochure.  By this time the Grand Wagoneer only had a small photo as Jeep was trying to promote their smaller versions, which became very popular in their own right.
