Little problem with car storage, they have damaged our car.

So as many of you are aware I?ve been taking care of a collection of cars for a client who I built a house for a few years ago. Still have a couple here in the valley so found storage for one at a new facility last week. They have a stacking system much like the boat storage facilities. This 66 Chevelle is an older restoration and was done by the Roadster Shop out of Illinois.  When I took it in the fellow checking me in asked if it was okay to stack it. Saw many nice cars already up there so wasn?t too concerned. All I told him was to check under there first as the car is on air. I had it raised high going in there.  Drove by there today thinking all must have gone well but when I got home I got some pictures from my client showing damage to the car. Supposedly wasn?t on the lift right so they caved in the rear quarter. Now next thing for me to deal with is they assume no responsibility for this. Have reached out to my client and offered to pay their deductible. Not sure how to approach this yet. Im sure there will be some fine print to protect them.

Oh man......somebody's not talking and needs to man up, wow. Are you saying they acknowledge doing it but won't accept any responsibility getting it taken care of?

That's basically it. They have even sent those pictures to my client to show what has happened. I realize you have to carry insurance usually in case the place burned down or vandals or thieves got in there but this is quite clear on who would be to blame. Otherwise I would have parked the car in there myself.

Carl, do you recognize the color of the car? Engine bay is the same color and on the top of the LS shroud it has the Phoenix Sun logo. Glad I have an awesome semi-retired painter who has a very nice back yard shop and can match any color.

The question I ask, are you responsible at this level for any damage Jerel? Is this a favor, a friend, or a paid service with a contract?

I'd say you had no intent to do anything but was right for the client, as such you shouldn't be responsible for any costs should you?

There are ways to have that storage place pay...what did you say the name of the place is?

I'm fine.  They pay me for this but the storage fees are billed directly to them.  They just pay me for taking the car there, picking it up and doing whatever it needs.  So no pressure on me but I always strive to act on behalf of my clients even if they are wealthy.

Yes, so there is that feeling here Jerel that you just want to make it right with them. I get it.

But the facility needs to pay 100% to make that right. Or suffer the consequences of being negatively exposed. That is just BS on their part.

I'm sorry Jerel, I would only be guessing at the colour.

Pretty sure the Sun had a similar color like this a few years ago for their uniforms.

Yes they do, just not sure it's identical.

Just looked it up and it was there alternate uniforms introduced in 2003 during the "Planet Orange" era. Also had parts of their uniform this color on previous years. The car gets attention.

Well that sucks, they move the car and damage it and don't want to be responsible for it?? WTF. I'm sure they must have insurance for this sort of thing.
How in the Hell did they move the car as to damage it like that?? Must had to push it sideways into something. Hope you get it sorted out.

Sucks that it happened, but is that 1/4 full of mud?

Yeah it definitely has mud and I know there is some on the other side.  An older restoration but they went the easy route with parts of it.  I went and looked at the car last week and the damage isn't as bad as the pictures look in my opinion.  Taking my painter over there this week and we will get it figured out.  Owner has told me not to worry at all about it as it had been bumped in a trailer once before on the other side.

In response to mr57, I think 90% of the so called restoration shops these days use tons of mud to straighten out a car. Not my idea of a restoration, but the man hours to get metal perfect far exceeds the value of a vehicle pretty quickly in doing so.

So I dropped off the Chevelle last week to get the rear quarter fixed. Just an excellent result again as my buddy has saved us so many times for a reasonable amount. Part I feel bad about is that the fellow I use is in his 70s and you always wonder how long these guys will keep on doing this awesome work.

Passenger side looks the same Jerel? wink Most shops won't even tackle a job like that anymore. They can make 400 an hr fixing bumpers and bolting on parts. You couldn't even find a book rate on that 1/4 repair...... Had to laugh...buddy took his car in for a fender repair (he got hit) the shop charged 1/2 hr labour to remove the old fender emblem, but they billed ICBC for a new fender emblem??? If they bought a new one..why remove the old one!!!!

He did an amazing job. Major damage was on the driver's side and he also fixed the passenger bottom quarter which had a bondo crack and it cost me less than $1100. I hope there is another generation behind him waiting to take his place. He has a real nice set up right behind his house.
