I didn't expect to see the rear tailights like a Canadian car al la Chevrolet. A US safari wagon wouldn't have that sheet metal and tail lights would it?

The only Americian Pontiac station wagons with pontiac tailights would be a safari. The 860/ 870 series used chevrolet quarter panels and the opening for the tailights was chevrolet. The unique 55/56 pontiac tailight used on all other station wagons Canadian and Americian are very rare now and the lenses both tailight and backup light are very expensive. The station wagon tail light lenses are different than all other 55 tailight lenses being thinner in diameter.

Thanks Al, I am going to assume that the Chevrolet taillight would actually work in that opening as well if somene really needed to use it.

Yes a chevrolet tail light fits the opening . During the custom craze in the 50's and early 60's Pontiac station wagon tail lights were used on 55 Chevrolets as a customizing touch.
